We have one happy news to share...

Members from Jakarta Toastmasters Club (JTC) did a great job in Speech Contest area I-1 on September 18, 2011.

We are very proud that Bahtiar Manurung and Thomas Alfiandes, who represented JTC in the contest in prepared speech session, became the first winner and second runner-up. Beside that, we also did a great achievement in evaluation session as Ignatius Ronny and Johan Setiawan, both from JTC, were first and second best evaluator.

Bahtiar Manurung will represent area I-1 in the next level competition. And of course...we wish him a very good success.

Back to Menara Imperium

After 2 weeks moving to Ayam Bulungan due to the emergency situation, finally we will be back again to Menara Imperium. Starting next Monday, Sept 26, 2011, the regular meeting of Jakarta Toastmasters Club will be hosted in PB Taxand, Menara Imperium 29th Floor, Jalan Rasuna Said, Kuningan, Jakarta Selatan.

Make sure you will be there for attending a meeting where you can sharpen your public speaking skill as well as well leadership skill in a very positive environment.

If you are more than willing to come, please kindly note that the meeting will be commenced at 7 P.M. So, please come before that as delicious dinner will be served at 6.

Our TOM was TM Jesse Timms, visiting Toastmaster from California,he led a very good meeting. Opened with the story of his experience as an exchange student in Africa.

Theme that day was "Learn To Lead"

WOD was "Vision" (noun).

We had 6 guests..one of them already came twice..ahaa..and one was recommended by his nephew who attended Jakarta Bahasa Toastmasters club (Indonesian language based toastmasters club).and one joined today as member.
And also 13 member attended

We had 3 speakers:

1. TM Bahtiar BM#2 (Organize Your Speech)Title: Attitude that can change your life spoke about 3 attitude that can change our life: I Can Do attitude, Feel Grateful,and Appreciate Attitude..That Was So Inspiring

2. TM Valeriya BM#9 (Persuade with Power) Title The Wisdom of Murphy's Law
Spoke about her travel experience between Germany to Italy,Venice. Just one to go,TM Valeriya..Bravo..

3. CC Rini AM#1 (Persuasive Speaking) Effective Sales, Title: Multi Protection Product Spoke and did role play with TM Omar about selling toothpaste .and she did the sale! Good job, Sales Lady..

Table Topic Master was "fresh father " TM Omar..
We had 4 Speakers for Table Topics:

1. Guest Thea spoke about her experience when her baby was born
2. ACB Harry spoke about a father feels about his son.
3. CC Ronny spoke about how he would give advice how to live happily.

Toastmaster of the Meeting ACS/CL Harry led us safely through the reality of the Toastmasters meeting !

Prepared speakers:

TM Henry BM # 4. How to say it (5-7 min) : The silent killers informed us about the symptoms of an imminent heart attack.

TM Kardinal BM # 7, Research your topic (5-7 min) : I didn’t lose my heart, I sold it on FB, talked about the rich in the real world.

ATM Robert AM # 4, Keep them laughing, (5-7 min)advanced manual Humorously speaking, When my wife is not around, entertained us with his experiences of being “Home alone”….

Table Topics master TM Jesse transformed the audience into potential rich investors who want to put their money into the tourist business of certain countries. The following “tourist representatives” really did their best to show the best side of “their country”: TM Valeriya (China), Guest Thea (Canada), Bahtiar (Austria), CC/CL Lola (Russia), Guest Rudy (Egypt).

General Evaluator : CC/CL Lola from British Toastmaster Club led swiftly the Evaluation session and was helped by grammarian TM Omar, timer TM Sellya, Ah counter TM Bahtiar, Ballot counter TM Valeriya. Individual evaluators were DTM Johan and DTM Harlina.

A lots of “oh”’s and “ah’s” and picture taking in the beautiful, prestigious lobby of the company PB Taxand on Merara Imperium, 29 th floor… (on the right hand side from the elevator).
Toastmaster of the meeting CC Fathia led us through a fun night for the first time in our homeland or Hawai : in the training room of PB Taxand.

CC Olivia : AM # 1 , The toast (advanced manual special occasion speeches) 2-3 min: Toast : wished a happy homecoming for Jakarta Toastmasters club
TM Ainy : BM # 2 , organize your speech, 5-7 min, “Willingness”… talked about the strength of the will.
TM Susan : BM # 4, How to say it, 5-7 min, Birth, wedding and funeral, talked about the important moments in one's life.
Table topics session
Table Topics master CC Olivia really challenged the speaker’s fast thinking skills by showing 5-7 pictures in a certain order. The speaker has to be able to connect the pictures and wave a nice story around it… Some pictures I remember showed beautiful sea views, beautiful ladies and beautiful turtles…
The brave speakers were:

- CC Rini who talked about men and women
- TM Jesse talked about the “fountain of youth”

Confessions of a Shopaholic….. oopsss…Contestant

Hi all,

Participation is more important than winning. Maybe you may not believe me, because I was able to take home a nice trophy as first runner up of the JTC evaluation contest on 30 Aug 2010.

However participation at contests more than once as contestant or contest official does help !! It helps me reduce my nervousness and therefore enjoy the contest more. I have participated at least 4 times in contests…I ended up for intl’ speech- on club and division level, for humorous speech on club level and for evaluation contest on division level.…

And don’t ask me how many times I was tally counter, sergeant-at- arms or judge at club, area and division contest. Being a participant more than once helped me to be less nervous because I was familiar with the contest procedures and the judging criteria. Being several times volunteer individual evaluator also helps… I thought I was more than ready…

So on 30 August 2010, I was dead calm… because lots of things were familiar to me… the venue was familiar, the food was familiar, my task as club treasurer was familiar. Still I really appreciated a cup of coffee from a very supportive Toastmasters’ friend. I even almost forgot to eat… Was it because I was too busy..or because I was still nervous, despite everything…
Even the faces of the visiting toastmasters were familiar . I knew 99,9 % of them already because I met them years, months, day(s) before the contest at Toastmasters’ contests, officer’s trainings and convention committee meetings . I even noticed dignitaries such as 2 division governors and 2 area governors.. Wow, we are only having a contest on club level but the caliber of the visiting crowd was like a contest audience of a few levels higher…
Then I wondered : “ Which one of them will be the test speaker that I have to evaluate for evaluation contest… Which one of them smiled a bit too much at me or try to avoid looking at me because this person knew that I am an contestant ? “
It turned out that the test speaker was the “smiley” one !! When I saw Ted as the test speaker coming on the stage : then all my nervousness levels went from 0 % to 200 % !!! What the (beep)… , Ted was a past first runner- up AND Division winner of the humorous speech contest. So he participated twice on Division I level and ended on a honorable place…As a Division winner, he represented our Division I on international level !! Oh dear, what the…(without beep)… Then after his speech and all of us contestants leaving the room, all contestants said out loud or deep in their heart: “What the …(I don’t remember whether it was with or without beep) : How are we going to evaluate such a great speech ? “
However, I had no time to blame the chair or chief judge of the contest for choosing such a challenging test speaker, because we only had 5 minutes time to prepare our evaluations. Then.. showtime !! When I started my evaluation in front of the audience, strangely, my nervousness decreased from 200 % to 5 % in the first 10 seconds !!! I even enjoyed delivering my 2-3 minutes speech !
As I was the first person who had to deliver her evaluation on the contest, I had the privilege to listen to all the evaluations… When I heard the competitors, I thought several times: “ Oh he also noticed that” , or , “why on earth did I not notice that ?” That last sentence came in my mind often especially when I heard Matthew’s evaluation. His observations and suggestions were more meaningful and spot on ! His participation in more than one contest finally paid off… I knew that the nicest trophy was not for me… This made my nervousness all of a sudden fall to minus 100 % and I just decided to comfort myself and relax during the rest of the competition.
All of a sudden I noticed that the 3 main roles of the contest officials (chair, chief judge and toastmaster of the contest) were all first timers. Some of them were the last persons to eat dinner after 9 pm… Kudos to them, because if I were them, I would almost die out of stress and nervousness, while handling lots of (un)predicable and unfamiliar stuff for the first time in a more formal setting.
I also happily noticed that many of our club members helped out as sergeant at arms, timer, tally counter and that we also got some help from visiting Toastmasters.
Then I realized that an event such as a club contest could not be possible without the hard work and courage of the contest officials and the preparation and guts of the contestants !
Participation in front or behind the scene is indeed important and will help us to lift us to the next level of comprehension, courage and calmness.
So who wants to participate as contest official at the upcoming Area I-1 contest ? And who wants to participate as contestant/contest official at the international speech and table topics club contest in January/February 2011 ??

3 ACB Matthew with Sky Diving Experience. He told us how scary anticipation doesn't work when we conquer our fear. Just Do It.
4 CC Fathia with She -males best friend experience. She told how much fun it is to have She- males as a best pals and that they encourage her to do things.
5 CC Ronny with Comparison of Master of Science vs Master of Common Sense, and how it can affect our life.

Dear All,

Heavy traffic jams could not stop us JTC-ers from having a fun and fruitful meeting !

VP Membership (VPM) TM Henry opened the meeting.

CC Yuli enthusiastically led the meeting and made me realize that one of the reasons that we are in JTC is because inside our heart we have our own ambititon.. Wow... deep !!

She also led the prepared speech session with the following four speakers:
TM Beli (BM # 2, organized your speech), competent communcation (CC) manual , 5-7 min, entitled "Marriage dilemma, Career of Family", talked about the balancing act in his married life.

TM Cindy (BM # 1, icebreaker), CC manual, 4-6 min showed us how she was infected and inspired by the "law".

TM Valeriya (BM # 7, Research your topic), CC manual , 5-7 min, entitled "Ambition, is it good or bad ? ", urged us to take a good look at the source of our ambitions.

TM Jay (BM # 2, organized your speech), CC manual , 5-7 min, entitled " The power of appreciation" , made me write down a quote (the name of the auhor escaped me) that sounded approximately as follows : " One of the basic needs of people is to have the desire to feel important and the craving to be appreciated" .

Table Topics master ATM Robert stimulated a lot of laughter because he opened and closed his session with a joke and creatively let the following speakers read selected jokes and give comments on it :

- TM Cindy said how the joke could be related to her own family situation
- CC Yuli said that the joke is related to "grass that is always greener on the other side"
- TM Valeriya told about "reading people" over and over again and look for its deeper meaning.
- Yours Truly commented on how love can be blind, especially if the love interest is only 2 -dimensional
- DTM Johan said that happiness in married life can only be obtained with hard work and compromise...

We had 3 Prepared Speech speakers that day
1. CC Ainy redid her # BM1 (the icebreaker, 5-7 min).She told us about her Childhood experience with her sister..that was so touching.

2. TM Henry #BM3 (get to the point, 5-7 min). He told about "How to take care your heart before hospital does". Its show us how to maintain our heart. He did well with good pictures.

3. CC Ronny,did #AM2 From the advanced manual, "Speeches by management" Briefing (8-10 min plus Q&A 5 min) on "Chasing CC/CL".told us how to chase CC/CL,why we must chase it and encouraged us to improve our speeches..

We had education session by ATMB/OCL Etta
It described about how to evaluate people, choose the words and evaluate at contest.
It was very informative.

Dear fellows

We had another gorgeous meeting tonight...... and it was started quite on time. There were 24 people in the meeting; 7 guests who mostly found Toastmaster from website, 2 visitors from The British Toastmasters Club (TB TMC) and 15 members.

Our theme was “Internationalism” and our toastmaster of meeting, ACS/CL Harry successfully brought international vibe into our meeting. He explained the theme was about globalization and how it reflected clearly in JTC mix culture members across countries. To support the theme, DTM Harlina dressed up like "winter in Russia" with a "hairy " hat and red/white/black woolen jacket.

First time GE, TM Jay then introduced her team members: CC Shabrina (TB TMC) as Grammarian, TM Kardinal as Timer, TM Nita as Ballot Counter and CC Ivan as “Ah.. Haiikk.. Haiya..” & WOD Counter.

The word of the day was “TOLERATE”

Let’s start our first session. TM Valeriya was really well prepared for this table topic session and did many research about cultures in many countries. Five voluntary speakers came on stage:

1 TM Subchan was asked about a beautiful lady and should make a guess where she comes from. He talked about comparison between physical beauty and inner beauty then he guessed the lady was from the Philippines. The correct answer was a Kazakh lady and she was 6th rank at the Miss Universe pageant in 2009.

2 Guest Weni talked about a Japanese lady and she assumed the lady was getting married because of her make up and hair style. The lady actually is an Australian and her profession is "Geisha".

3 Guest Krisna got a question about an ancient lady. He smartly explained his assumptions about the lady and correctly guessed that she was Nefertiti from Egypt.

4 Guest Istiana made a guess about a picture of an Asian Royal father and daughter. It turned out to be a picture of the tallest Mongolian man and his wife.

5 TM Nazruddin talked about a sexy big lady in ballet costume. On the other hand it is not about appearance, the lady was one of the good leaders. Nowadays beauty in leadership is more important than physical beauty.

Next was prepared speech session, with 3 prepared speakers:
• CC Rini delivered her AM3 entertaining speech; title “Fit and Proper Test”. She delivered an interesting story about her date where she had to pass 3 tests; BMW (red colored Bajaj), nasi uduk sambel jengkol and her effort to go to her romantic venue with high heels. She was evaluated by DTM Johan

• CC Fathia gave us an enjoyable AM1 humorous speech; title “5 Things To Do When You Were in Blue”. She began her story how to find God in the right river, followed by tips to overcome “blue” session in our life. Here's her tips: 1. organizing... anything anywhere anytime, 2. shopping (means relaxing therapy by CC Fathia's dictionary), 3. having parties, 4. doing whatever you desire to do 5.having faith. She was evaluated by DTM Harlina.

• TM Toni presented his BM3 project, title “4 Minutes Golden Time”. He showed us what we can do to safe other's life and also gave us a real demonstration of giving CPR. He was evaluated by CC Lola (TB TMC).

Then our last session was the evaluation session.

General evaluation team did a good job. First time GE, TM Jay commented our yummy food, room.... she also expressed her gratitute to all participants including guests who contributed in the meeting and make it an entertaining meeting.

Our theme that night was Ha Ha Event, CC Olivia the TOM that night brought a Fun Meeting.
She introduced her team:
General Evaluator (GE) that night was ACB Matthew, his team consisted of :

We had 3 Prepared Speakers:
1. TM Revi delivered His BM1(Ice Breaker, 5-7 min)"My English Journey". He told about his experience on learning English since junior high school. It made us understand his passion of learning English.

2. TM Kardinal delivered his BM5 (Body Language, 5-7 min)"Leadership Through Service" . He told about his experience about servicing as Sergeant at Arms (SAA) at Toastmasters. He open with taekwondo standing demo..very creative.

3. TM Valeriya delivered her BM6 (Vocal Variety, 5-7 min)"Chasing! The Confession of a Shopalchoholic"..she told a story about a woman who likes to shopping, with a dramatical expression.

We had Game Session, led by Game Master DTM Harlina.
We were divided in 3 groups and each group must make drawings about a quote and 1 person spoke about the quote. It was a lot of fun. Speakers were:

CC Ainy

We had an educational sharing session by ACB/CL Rudiyanto from The Innovators Toastmasters Club about "How to Make a Humorous Speech with 1 Sentence" . He was the winner of the humorous speech contest on District level in Kota Kinabalu (2003) and first runner up in KL (2006), Malaysia. It was amazing to learn from him that a winner's speech is only made by 1 sentence of his experience.
Everyone can do it.

Then our VP PR Olivia explained her Public Relations program with special events e.g. bowling night that upcoming Thursday 29 Jul 2010 and Lebaran Karaoke in Sep 2010.

She invited us to use and exercise our creative energy and leadership skills to help promote our beloved Jakarta Toastmasters Club through updating the website, putting together newsletters and organizing special events.

TM Subchan said about "keys to avoid broken heart", that we musn't hold our love, just let it go when separation happens

TM Henry told a story about his junior high school experience to woo a pretty girl

That day's prepared speech session, we had 3 speakers:

TM Ika BM#3 (get to the point , 5-7 min), shared her knowledge about DR ABC = Danger,Response,Airway, Breath and Circulation..that's how we can help someone in critical situation.

TM Jay BM#1 (Icebreaker 4-6 min), shared about what she is now and what she wants to be 10 years from now

TM Valeriya BM#5 (Your body speaks 5-7 min), shared about how communication presents as touch, it can make other people happy, stimulate their minds.

Monday 26 July 2010, we will meet back in Tamnak Thai restaurant, Menteng. To welcome the season of the humorous speech contests (Aug-Oct), we are honoured to welcome a special guest speaker :

ACB/CL Rudyanto Sutardji from "The Innovators Toastmasters Club".

He was one of the handful Indonesians who won a contest on DISTRICT level since District was born around 16 years ago:
- winner of humorous speech contest in 2003 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
- first runner up, also of humorous speech contest in 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He will speak on how to make a humorous speech out of one sentence !

So be prepared to laugh and learn how to make others laugh !

JOURNEY….

That was our theme last night. Our newly VP Membership (VPM), TM Henry was our Toastmaster of the Meeting and he picked the theme due to his recent journey to Solo with his family to attend his brother’s wedding. He referred the theme to our journey in toastmaster where we need guidance in our “Toastmaster’s journey” so we will not get lost…. Want to know more?

The meeting was opened a little bit late by our president, DTM Johan. 14 people came including 2 guests and 1 visiting Toastmaster from Jakarta Motivators Toastmasters Club.

Our immediate past Secretary, CC Fathia was our GE. She introduced her team members: DTM Harlina as Grammarian, TM Wahyu as Timer, soon to be TM Jay was Ballot counter and TM Kardinal was Ah and WOD counter.
The word of the day was “PLAN”

Unlike the regular meeting, there was no table topic session. Prepared speech session was our first session and we had 2 prepared speakers:

TM Valeria delivered her BM4 (Working with words, 5-7 min), title “Writing Haiku”. She explained in detail what Haiku is and gave many examplest. “Haiku” is poem in Japanese. Of course our Japanese expert ACB Astuty was her evaluator

TM Yoanita amazed us with her Ice Breaker (4-6 min) titel " the journey, I become me" . She started her speech by letting us know about her passions and how her life just began after she knew her passions. She was evaluated by ATMB/CL Etta

Then our second session was Educational Session, held by no other than our president DTM Johan. He explained in detail about “Mentoring” in toastmaster. He asked: "Did you still remember who your mentor is? When did the last time you contact him/her?".... Some among us were surprised and tried to remember his/her mentor.
Then he also reminded us here in Toastmasters that we learn by doing to be on track to achieve higher level and a Mentor will guide us in our journey in Toastmaster. Do you want to BE e a Mentor? Do you want to HAVE a mentor ? We have many vacancies for Mentor/mentee. All you need to do is just contact Johan (johan_seti@yahoo.com), but please do it in an appropriate time otherwise …. You know laah the consequences...

Next session was Evaluation Session. Although we could have started earlier and add some background music , our GE pointed out there were 10 items she liked in that meeting:

1. Meal on time, 2. Befriend a guest, 3. Combination of attendees, 4. Educational session, 5. Finally we can see on the banner that our club name is The Jakarta Toastmasters Club , 6. color of our banner, 7. New format of agenda, 8. Speeches, 9. the Lectern, 10. Again it’s about meal; we still had meals although meeting was almost over.

What a great start of the new Toastmasters’s term Jul 2010 – Jun 2011 !!
21 Attendees : of which 2 guests and 1 visiting Toastmaster (Unilever Toastmasters Club)

The meeting was opened smoothly by our Brand New President DTM Johan...

The Toastmaster of the Meeting (TOM ), CC Ronny..continued the meeting with a lot of energy with the theme from our International President,” Achieving Greatness Together”.Word of day was “significant. He was lively and he ensured that the meeting had a good flow.

Our first session was the Debate Session conducted by Matthew. It was so much fun ! The topic was about “Sinetron in Indonesia”.
Two debaters were on the positive side: TM Sabar and visiting Toastmaster Khrisma (Unilever)..

And 2 debaters were on the negative side: Guest Irfan and TM Valeriya.
The Debate was won by the negative side.

We also had tremendous 6 speakers. Its happens rarely that none of speaker cancelled.

1 TM Nazrudin delivered his BM1 (Icebreaker, 4-6 min) with enthusiasm about why he want to join Toastmasters. He said that during his1st time visit, he was very surprised with all people here because he thought his English was not so good.but he found many advantages here in the club: more friends, increased confidence and opportunity to improve English.

2 TM Toni delivered his BM2 (Organize your speech, 5-7 min) about “Flood”, what is flood, how to avoid and handle it.

3 TM Olivia delivered her BM10 (Inspire your audience), 8-10 min) about a little cup..and its comparison with how we mold ourselves in Toastmasters. So touching..Congratulations CC Olivia !!

4 TM Susan delivered her BM2 (Organize your speech, 5-7 min) about her childhood experience with Dad and coffee,

5 TM Lisna delivered her BM2 (Organize your speech, 5-7 min) about “Fatherlessness” ,its about father presence in the family, and how she adores his father although her father was busy with job..It reminded us what the function of a father is in the family..

6 TM Henry delivered his BM2 (Organize your speech, 5-7 min), about expressing your feelings..it’s a touching story about his daughter .

Theme: JTC 30th Anniversary

Jakarta Toastmasters Club (JTC) knows for sure how to end the Toastmasters Year (2009-2010) with a bang ! It was a healthy mix of appreciation and party while there were also unraveling of hidden singing and dancing talents and intimate thoughts... Sometimes I felt like sitting around a glamorous version of a campfire with all my friends...

Dinner was yummy, Cake was yummy and of course the program was yummy, led by a very enthusiastic Toastmaster of the Meeting: our very own Area I -1 governor DTM Patar... he definitely " gave us fire and took us higher" (borrowed by the Coca cola World Cup soccer song :-)

Excuse Topic Master ATMB/CL Etta smartly discovered all those excuses, people were hiding behind:
- ATMB/CL Etta: balance between work and play
- ACS/CL Harry : take a break
- CC Rini : going for the fast track
- DTM Johan : money talks

Romantic Master ACS/CL Harry set the mood for a karaoke table topics and digged into people's memories:
-TM Ika sang "That's what friends are for" ... and talked friendship
- CC Rini sang Hero and about her late father
-TM Nita sang Mama Mia (ABBA) and talked among others about the movie

Game master DTM Patar involved everyone into JTC's ballgame while using karaoke songs of e.g. Michael Jackson " This is it"...And when the music stopped: the following talked about:
- " Feel" ... ACS/CL Harry
- " Time" ...TM Nazrudin
-"Girlfriend" ...TMD Anne
- " Spent"... CC Rini

Dance master ACB/CL Astuty brought the cha-cha-cha vibe into the room and challenged couples to cha cha with head-against- the-balloon. ... as loooong as possible... and the secret to win this game ? to have treasurer experience at JTC. Right, partner CC Ivan ?

Award master Bapak JTC Presiden ACB Matthew led the appreciation session solemnly and gave warm introductions to the recipients. In Hawai they drape a wreath of flowers around people's neck, but last night was more like an electronic -age- kind -of- necklace for all the recepients of the following fun awards:

Testimony master, CC Fathia, lovingly invited us to walk down memory lane again, but this time more into the lanes of Toastmaters. ..
- CC Fathia : about her first impression of Toastmasters 5 years before she joined as a member !
- CC Rini : about the fast lane and how Toastmasters helped her in dealing with customers
- TM Valeriya: about little mermaid and let your (especially) female voice be heared. Her husband became curious why she looks so happy every time she comes back home from a JTC meeting... (note from the editor: we, JTC-ers know !!)
- ATM Robert: about how in the beginning JTC went from global to local.

The most yummy part of the evening: THE CAKE !!! 6 past-present- future JTC presidents plus our current area governor blew out the - 30 - canddles !!

Then came the handover from JTC President ACB Matthew (2009-2010) to JTC President elect DTM Johan Setiawan... who presented his "Royal " committee to the audience: the whole JTC Executive Committee 2010 - 2011 stood in front :

Secretary : TM Susanna, Treasurer DTM Harlina and Sergeant - at - arms : TM Kardinal

Our brand new JTC president DTM Johan Setiawan shared with us that he visited 6 ( !!) clubs before he decided to join JTC !! He learned a lot at JTC was impressed by especially the history of the club . Then he pointed out that at this JTC birthday party there were also 5 past-present- future area I -1 governors present and 3 Division past-present Division I governors !!
He motivated us all to make JTC one of the best clubs in Indonesia !

The evening ended with a splash of aspiring pop, rock and dangdut stars !!

It was a great party of eating and appreciating, sharing and singing,
playing and dancing on " La JTC Isla Bonita" / the pretty JTC Island !!!

Yes, fellow Toastmasters, World Cup is coming and in the next meeting you will be given the Freedom to express your way to support your most favorite team. Bring out the Fire inside of you and be ridiculous, be crazy, wear your favorite team uniform (or at least something which express your favorite team color), paint your face, bring your Vuvuzela (African Horn), and get ready to have a really Fun Night.

Coz, only in the next Monday you will be allowed to scream out loud like the British’s Hooligans or the Persija’s Jakmania. And that is only one of the Reasons you should come Next Monday.

Don’t miss it! Toastmaster Team will be playing agains boredness, and dullness next monday, so be sure you bring your Fun and Creativity with you. And we all can be Higher than before.

Hail to the new Exco!

Two Monday nights ago, on June 7, 2010, we had our Exco selection. Playing the role as the TOM that night was DTM Imung, with the theme of CONFIDENT, TRUST, AND HOPE.

The GE was TM Omar, assisted with TM Fathia as Grammarian, TM Henry as the Timer, TM Susanna as the Ballot Counter, and Guest Rani as the Ah & WOD Counter. There were 25 person coming to the meeting, including 7 guests.

Different with our meeting, we have a special session from the current Exco. Each one of them came up and explained their role.

Not wanting to miss any learning opportunity, we still had our prepared speeches session that night.

TM Olivia deilevered her BM 9 titled “80:20”. She was eveluated by CC Ronny. And CC Rini delivered her first advance manual ‘Entertaining Speech’, titled ‘Make Over’. She was evaluated by the model herself, DTM Harlina.

After the evaluation session, we proceeded with the Election Session, also chaired by TM Imung.

To encourage member’s participation and motivation to become the next Exco, VP PR, VPE, and the Club president shared their achievement during their reign. Some of the achievements are:
§ 1 newsletter published
§ Web and blog beautifully maintained and updated
§ Free publication in cooperation with Wall Street Institute
§ Achieve 10 out of 10 points for the club achievement.
§ Memberships definitely increases
§ Changes of some of the Exco due to some other life situations.

Ensuring that the election was done the right way, DTM Johan explained the parliamentary procedure. That is: the Election Chair says that we are now selecting for this position (actually there is the right wording to say it…but I didn’t write it down. It was just entertaining seeing DTM Imung kept saying that formally…so not her…hahaha).

And then one person nominate him/herself or someone else. Then we need two other person to agree / amend that proposition. If we have to person amend that person, then he / she is eligible to be nominated. The fair part is before the election begin, that nominated person get to be asked, whether he/she is willing to be selected. He/she has the right to agree or disagree.

After all the first amendment, second amendment, amen, and omen, finally here’s our new Exco:

Meeting was opened by an uplifting VP Membership CC Yuli who solemnly inducted our newest member TM Beli. Welcome to Jakarta Toastmasters Club TM Beli !

Table Topic Master (TTM ) TM Valeriya, Toastmaster of the Meeting (TOM) CC Thomas and General Evaluator (GE) CC Yuli gave comments that were cleverly sprinkled by statements about the benefits of Toastmaters !

A. TTM TM Valeriya led the session with thought provoking questions about husbands and wives !! The speakers were candid in their answers:
- Guest Nita talked about white lies and the naked truth.
- Guest Yoshua said that even though in Indonesia women tend to apologize first due to the culture, it shouldn't be gender related about who apologizes first.
- Guest Cindy explained why women are more appropriate to be the finance manager of the household.
- TM Beli suggested that husbands should give compliments to their wife once in a while.
- Guest Maya told us about how supportive her husband is...

B. Toastmaster of the Meeting CC Thomas allowed us to take a glance in the Toastmasters World, more precisely in the District 51 Toastmasters Convention in Miri (Malaysia) and safely guided us throughout the meeting.

Prepared speakers were:

- TM Subchan - Basics of competencies - BM # 2, Organize your speech (5-7 min), reminded me to increase my "added value" in life...Change or die !

- TM Ika - Work life balance- BM # 2 Organize your speech (5-7 min), suggested how to have fun during the weekend !

- TM Omar- Civil wars do make sense - BM # 6 Vocal variety ( 5-7 min), got very personal and transported us back to his youth in a civil war torn Beirut (Lebanon).

C. GE CC Yuli thoroughly led her team:

- Ah and WOD counter : TM Lisna
- Timer : TM Hotma
- Ballot counter: TM Iman

It was an all -male -evening when it came to leadership roles:
TM Kardinal as the Table Topics Master (TTM),

CC Ivan as the General Evaluator (GE)

A. TTM TM Kardinal led the session with a twist by giving first teasers to attract "voluntary" table topic speakers.The courageous speakers were:
- TM Toni who as minister of sports, wanted to make children practice practice practice to become badminton world champions
- Guest Revi who talked about the relationship between nose size and immune system
- TM Beli who said 3-years old do lie 70 % of the time...
- TM Subchan who elaborated on his birthday plans as a statesman
- TM Ika who would like to improve the stability of the political situation

B. TOM CC Ronny swiftly led the meeting in such a way that the meeting ended 30 minutes earlier... He gave interesting, personalized introductions to the prepared speakers.

Prepared speakers were:

- TM Valeriya - Benefits of reading fairy tales - BM # 3, Get to the point (5-7 min), reminded me of lullabies

- CC Thomas - The professional meeting - AM # 5 The persuasive leader/ Advanced Manual Persuasive Speech (6-8 min), reminded me to pursue my personal goals while being active member in JTC.

- CC Astuty - My Mom's wedding - AM # 1 Mastering the Toast /Advanced Manual Special Occasion speeches (2-3 min), reminded me that there is always room for romance. Right "my darling daugther ?"

C. GE CC Ivan was thorough in his feedback and his leadershipskills of his observant team:

Minutes of 10 May 2010 Meeting

Before tonight’s minutes of meeting comes fresh early morning tomorrow…please allow me to share with you what happened last Monday, 10 May 2010.

MAKE THE BEST OF IT!

That was the theme chosen by our energetic TOM, ACB/CL Vanessa.

We had a mixed crowd that night. Twenty people attended the meeting, including 3 visiting Toastmasters (TM Christian, TM Miranda and our TM Johan). Some ‘senior’ members came, so new members were seen….there were two guest enjoying the meeting.

Acting as the partner in crime was the GE, TM Fathia. She was assisted with ‘sergeants’ : ACB/CL Astuty who scrutinized the grammars in detail, TM Ika who diligently counted the timing of each speakers, TM Valeria who managed to run around the room to get the ballots from everyone, and last but not least ACB Matthew who was so focused in counting people’s Ah and WOD.

Our WOD was GLORIOUS.

TM Henry led his first table topic session smoothly. Four people participated, they were TM Ivan, TM Miranda, Guest Refi, and TM Rini.

In that glorious meeting, we had 4 prepared speakers:

•TM Raymond with his no titled Ice breakers J He was evaluated by CC Rini.•TM Sabaruddin with his BM 1, emphasizing that he is from North Sumatra J He was evaluated by another North Sumatran guy, ACS/ALB Johan.•CC Thomas WITH HIS AM 4 Persuasive Speech, trying to persuade the audience to build a casino. He was evaluated by ACB Matthew.
•TM Christian, who did his rehearsal for the district competition next week. He will be representing Indonesia in that competition! Yey for Christian.

And who was our favorite speakers? – Dude…I didn’t note it down..let me see…

•Best table topic speaker was TM Ivan?
•Best prepared speaker was TM Raymond?
•Best evaluator was ACB Matthew?

And ACB/CL Vanessa ended the meeting with a very inspiring story of Norman Cousins, who was cured from a terminal disease, with a chance of 1 out of 500 to survive, just by laughing…and enjoyed life.

Life isn’t that bad after all.

Ehm…guys…I know I have been absent in reporting the minutes for the past 4 meetings…please apologize.. too much late hours at the office in the past 2 weeks. I will catch up with the last 3 minutes..and somehow make it not so ‘in the past’…:D

Joint Division I and J conference: workshop & speech contests Sat 17 April 2010

Jakarta Toastmasters Club (Jakarta) supporters :

ACS/ALB Harry, ACS/CL Imung, TM Sabaruddin, TM Henry, TM Valeriya and myself were present as Jakarta Toastmasters Club (Jakarta)’s support for ACB/CL Vanessa (Jakarta) last Saturday 17Apr 2010 at the Joint Division I & J Speech contests which was part of the Toastmasters Division I & J conference held in The American Club ! Enjoy my short report and my pictures far below !

We also rooted for ACB Jhonson Sahlan (Jakarta Advance) as the representative of our Area I-1at the Table Topics contest. He eventually ended up as the first runner up at Division I Table Topics contest !

As for Division I International speech contest, it was indeed a tough competition and when Vanessa came on stage as contestant number 5 or last contestant.. I held my breath… Even though I only gave a small piece of advice in the past to Vanessa, I felt like a parent whose child is doing examination… So nervous… not able to think clear…

Flashback : Vanessa's gradual improvement of her speech at previous contests on club and area level... Heartwarming though to see how many fellow JTC-ers gave valuable input and support at any level of the competition.

Flash forward to Division contest: After JTC’s applause and cheers, Vanessa began her speech ! And with each word, my hope grew ! Ah… what great speech structure, great nonverbal delivery and great message of the speech: loud , clear and inspiring ! Could she ? But the competition was so strong !!

At the end of the contest, I went on stage as the Sergeant -at- Arms to announce the winners. I was nervous, as I unfolded the small piece of paper to read the result for the first time… Oh my goodness ! Is this the result ? I did not dare to look at Vanessa, afraid to betray my emotions….

I took a deep breath and shouted : and the winner is: Vanessa Hendriadi ! My face showed a teethless smile but my heart yelled “ Yeah Yeah Yeah !” In the auditorium I saw Jararta Toastmasters Club members on their feet, applauding ! What a feeling ! What a thrill ! What a ride for a contestant and their supporters !

Vanessa, lots of luck at the next contest round: the District 51 International Speech contest in Miri, Malaysia, 21-23 May 2010.

Dear fellow Toastmasters,

HAPPY BELATED EASTER!

Inspired by Easter theme last weekend our TOM, ACB Matthew Price, picked EASTER BUNNY as the theme for that night. He shared with us short review on history of Easter, Easter Bunny, and Easter Egg.

(Well, I was surprised that Easter Bunny do have a history. I thought it was just a ‘cool’ costume that Bridget Jones wore in the tea party---if any of you watched Bridget Jones Diary part 1 J)

T he word of the day was FIDGET, which means move relentlessly. If you don't know what it mean , just imagie what you would do if you were in a strange place and you really need to go to a toilet, yet you couldn’t find one. To make the matter worst, you don’t speak the language there… so what you're legs and hands are doing, that is fidgeting, my dear fellow Toastmasters J

That night we have an Induction ceremony, led by our VPPR, DTM Harlina. Congratulations to TM Valeria, TM Ika, TM Nasrudin, TM Iman, and TM Subchan for joining our cool club!

Partnering with ACB Matthew was TM Olivia as the GE. She was supported by TM Fathia as the Grammarian, TM Subchan as Timer, Guest Sabar as Ballot Counter, and TM Iman as Ah & WOD Counter.

Simple, delicious, and yet creative were the questions asked by our TTM, TM Jackson. He led us to share various views on Indonesian Food. TM Olivia, Guest Sabar, Guest Lisna, and TM Ika took the stage, talking about various Indonesian Food, from Gado-gado, bubur ayam, even Saksang. You name it, they got them all.

We had 3 prepared speakers:

TM Valeria, delivering her BM #1. If you think that she is just a ‘regular’ housewive, you should get to know much better. Go Valeria! She was evaluated by DTM Harlina.
TM Omar, delivering his BM #4. In his speech titled ‘A Family Dispersed’, he reminded us that all people in the world are really just a one big happy family. He was evaluated by, again, DTM Harlina.
ACB Matthew with his AM Speeches by Management – Technical Speech. He shared his research on ‘Low Calorie Martini’, which also known as cocaine – the content, the history, and why he enjoyed it so much! (no, I of course made up the last part...). He was evaluated by TM Fathia.

And who was our favorite speakers?

TM Olivia and TM Ika shared the spotlight of being the best Table Topic Speaker.
TM Valerie was the best Speaker.
DTM Harlina was the best Evaluator.

Fellow members,

There were 18 people attending for the meeting that night. We started the meeting with 6 existing members, and then have 5 additional 5 new family member joining in.

Among the 8 guests, 4 people has registered and PAID..and will soon be inducted to become members next week. (well, I don’t know whether we will have induction or not next week, but they will become member sooonnnn).

Anyway, the main message is...Let’s welcome them full team!

- Eight/ (ate?): Widi talked about a misfortune around the magical 8
- White: Sabar talked about e.g. purity and innocence
- Close : Guest Henry talked about “no gain without pain”

PREPARED SPEECH SESSION

TM Omar (BM # 3, get to the point), “All you ever wanted to know about the UN”, made me aware about the changes that UN might be pressured to do in their own structures.. He was well equipped with projector and laptop.

TM Widi (BM # 5, your body speaks), “Green Light”, talked about her preparation to be up, close and personal with John Legend at Java Jazz.

TM Rini (BM # 8, Visual aids), “Why do we have to pay more”, presented her powerpoint slides and talked e.g. about brand management of products… One word I remember from her speech is: “ ambiance”…

After the meeting, yummy birthday Cake and Chants were Cheered to Commemorate the March Celebrators such as…. Yours Truly…

Is adapting to changes keep you on track?

Well, having chosen the theme for last Monday night's meeting, March 1, 2010, ACB/CL Astuty who acted as the TOM surely did have to adapt to sudden changes, and she surely did keep on track on her leadership and organizing competency.

There were 15 people coming for the meeting, including 8 guests and 1 visiting TM, TM Ray, who actually used to visit us couple of months ago.

Before the meeting started, there were only few people listed as the role takers. With her cold hands, ACB/CL Astuty made some changes that night. Almost all the role taker double (for some even tripple) roled! So who are they?

She was assisted to run the meeting with our lovely GE, TM Imung. In her team, there were TM Ray as the Grammarian, TM Rini (and TM Imung) as The Timer, TM Robert as Ah & WOD Counter, and just-registered TM Subhan as the Ballot Counter.

The WOD was SPURIOUS, meaning 'not based on facts'.

One of the sudden changes was the additional of speaker that night. So we had 3 speakers:

TM Rini, with 'Restart your life'. Delivering speech after speech weekly, she delivered her BM 6. Rather than complaining or whining, she sets a good example on how you can improve your life. She was evaluated by TM Fathia.

TM Imung with DR ABC, from Advance Manual. She shared with us how to cope with emergency situation. Excitedly, the presentation was emphasized with her dancing. (I trully believed that TOM Astuty envied TM Imung for having to do the dances in public..she wanted to do that tooo). Her speech was evaluated by TM Robert.
TM Ray, with 'Lying'. Having an impromptu urge to re-presente his speech, he decided to do it last minutely. He was evaluated by TM Matthew.

Adapting to changes that night was also felt by our TTM, TM Matthew. Inspired by one of the video he saw in youtube, he posed some questions and quotations to the audiences. TM Fathia, TM Rini, Guest Subhan, Guest Yani, and Guest Eka stood up and responded to the challenges posed by TM Matthew.

And who was the winner for that night?
Best speaker was TM Imung.
Best table topic speaker was TM Fathia.
Best evaluator was TM Robert.

I sincerely believe that it was the TOM and her team did a great job in adapting to the changes that night. The timers were so creative in using their fingers to inform the timing to the speakers. And the first time ballot counter did a good job to tell the audience to torn the edge of the paper to be used as the ballot. One 'achievement' to note is that TM Imung tripple roled : she was the GE, Timer, and speaker!!

And although TM Astuty did cope well with the changes, she also could maintain to share her 'gossip' story about John and Jane in between sessions. Lesson of the story was that men only adapt to get the women! Once they got us, why bother to adapt anymore? hahaha...

Overall, it was a joyful meeting as usual. Hope to see you guys in the upcoming meeting. Let's full the room with more members than guests!

Toastmaster of the Meeting TM Yuli was very informative and shared how she felt as a new members a while ago .Interesting to know for the many guests present at the meeting !

First timer Table Topics master TM Hotma plunged mostly into current affairs:

- Guest Tya explained why she was in favor of Gus Dur's nomination of "National Hero"
- Another Guest acted as the Governor of Jakarta, facing the flood's problem
- Guest Subchan had to comment on Mother's Theresa :"Tomorrow has not yet arrived, the future is today.
- ACB Matthew described e.g. about the needed improvements in infrastucture if Indonesia is to host the World Soccer Championship in 2022.

The Prepared Speech session was fully packed, entertaining and varied :
- TM Omar (BM #2, organize your speech ) shared with us the secrets of effective storytelling
- TM Adi and TM Karoline (BM # 1, icebreaker) shared information about their background and their experiences... I really learned more about this "merger" and who to turn to if I would like to plan my financial future.
- TM Olivia (BM # 6, vocal variety), re-ignited my enthusiasm for "the big sale"...
- TM Rini (BM # 4, working with words) set an heathy example with daily yoga and treadmill. (note from editor... Vanessa you have company !) ..

The evaluation team was meticulously led by General Evaluator CC Ivan. He was also the grammarian and partial WOD counter. TM Kardinal waved the green-yellow-red flags in his role as timer while as Sergeant at Arms he was busy adjusting to a new venue. TM Selvi was ballot announcer and counter.

Attentive individual evaluators were: ACB Matthew 1, DTM Harlina 1, ACB Matthew 2, DTM Harlina 2 and CC Ronny.

In his evaluation, General Evaluator CC Ivan reminded us about the International Speech contest and Table topics contest that will be held in Jakarta Toastmasters Club on 22 Feb 2010 in Tamnak Thai.

Happy Weekend, Fellow Toastmasters!

Although almost late, but we still love to share with you of what happened in our last Monday, January 18, 2010 meeting.

As usual, at 6.45, all the delicious Sundanese food was presented in our long table. We started the meeting at 7.10 pm.

There were 18 people coming to the meeting. Guess what? THE GUESTS OUTNUMBER US AGAIN! There were 10 guests coming, and some of them were there for the second time.

So dear Fellow Toastmasters, we miss you sooo muuuucchhhhh… !!!

Interesting enough, the theme was ROUND TABLE. Although our table was really in the shape of long table!!

Taking the lead as the Toastmaster of the Meeting was TM Harlina. Due to the rigorous preparation of our team for the Wall Street Institute presentation, she thought it would be great to share more about Seminars, which is very closely related with the word ‘ROUND TABLE’.

Partnering with her as the General Evaluator was none other than our club president, TM Matthew. He was supported by TM Kardinal as The Timer, TM Yuli as The Grammarian, TM Fathia as Ah & WOD Counter, and Guest Yanti (who soon to be come a TM too) as the Ballot Counter.

Dressed in red and acting as the Table Topic Master was TM Fathia. Trying to beat the Sundanese music in that restaurant, she played a vibrant music and tossed a fury colourful ball around the participants. Who ever had the ball when the music stopped must stand up at front and voluntarily give a speech. There were 5 volunteers that night; Guest Ajeng, Guest Omar, Guest Febri, Guest Franky, and TM Yuli. They all explained about their dreams and opinions in regards to King Arthur era. After all, what is Round Table without King Arthur? It could be just another Chinese dining table, right?

Following the Table Topic session was the prepared speech sessions. In his BM#4 Project, TM Elbert shared his newly found meaning of being successful, that is doing what you like that could contribute something to the society. He decided that he’s not a competitive person, but he’d committed doing what he liked. His speech was evaluated by TM Matthew.

Also doing a BM#4 project was TM Olivia, who spilled her experience of traveling in Siem Reap, Cambodia. She never forgets about the Angkor Wat temple, the tuk-tuk ride experience, and the extraordinary sweet Cambodian food. Her speech was evaluated by TM Vanessa.

So who were our Best of the Best?

The best Table Topic speaker was TM Yuli.
The best Prepared speaker was TM Olivia.
The best Evaluator was TM Vanessa.

To answer the subject of this email, ROUND TABLE should be associated with Xena the warrior princess now, since all the winners were female! Yey!!

So Fellow Toastmasters… ..when was the last time you have Sundanese food and have a great time speaking English?

When was the last time the members outnumber the guests?

Those of you who were present at the meeting on Monday know that we will be doing a presentation to the student of the Wall Street Institute (3 presentations at their 3 centres). This will be a great opportunity for our club to increase awareness of who we are, a good chance to practice our speaking in a different environment and good fun too!

The presentations will be at:

•Pondok Indah Mall, Thursday 21 January 2010, 7-8pm
•Ratu Plaza, Wednesday 20 January 2010, 7-8pm
•Kelapa Gading, Saturday 23 January 2010, 4-5pm

We are aiming to get other TM people involved to facilitate small groups, answer questions in the Q and A session, and to speak to the students about TM. If you are interested, please email me or sms / call me. This is a good chance to get involved - and we need more of you!

Getting back on track.

Wow, how did TM Vanessa get back on track so quickly after holiday blues?

These are some tips that she shared:
§ Short work out. 5-10 minutes work out is better than nothing.
§ Try new recipe. Well, if you don’t want to do it yourself, you can persuade your wife, husband, maid, or family members to do it J
§ Eat healthy breakfast.
§ Drink water, min 8 glasses a day.
§ Track your food. Monitor what you’ve been eating, and see how you feel.
§ Share your goals with others so they can remind you when you’re off track.
§ Hang out with your friends.
§ Take a walk and enjoy it. Don’t worry, if you get lost..well that’s the fun part of it too maybe :D
§ Create a motivational collage. Put pictures of people you admire in the place where you can see them.
§ Ride your bike. (I share you my little secret, I can’t ride a bike :D – childhood trauma..hahahaha )

So what happened last Monday night?

As mentioned in the email, we have found a new venue, temporarily until we get a better one. However…our venue was really special. It’s on the second floor of Bumbu Desa restaurant and has the long table in it. I guess it’s a good place to practice for rather informal or toast-like speech. A change of ambience is a good exercise to test your public speaking skills.

At 6.45, the delicious sundanesse food were served, and the meeting itself started at 7.10 pm. There were 15 people enjoying the long table meeting, including Guest Ivan (who is TM Elbert’s brother), Guest Matthew who joined Atlanta Toastmaster, and Guest Lani (who was a friend of Guest Matthew and didn’t know anything about Toastmaster) . TM Arland, a visiting Toastmaster from Surabaya, was also seen among the crowds.

TM Vanessa was the TOM for that night. She boosted our energy for the year to come with the theme of ‘How Do I Get Back on Track?’. Her partner in crime was the GE, TM Harlina, who was assisted by TM Selvi as Grammarian, TM Rini as The Timer, TM Kardinal who volunteered to become a Ballot Counter, and TM Hotma who was the Ah&WOD Counter.

The WORD OF THAT DAY was CONSISTENT , which simply means NOT CHANGING.

That night we only had one prepared speaker, TM Fathia, who shared her own story of how to get back on track. Delivering her BM#6, she encouraged us to have a little faith in ourselves and God that life will go our way. She was evaluated by TM Robert.

Unlike the usual meetings, we had a rehearsal session for our presentation at the Wall Street Institute. TM Matthew opened the session by introducing himself in Wall-Street- Institute- way. He shared about what was Toastmaster and how it worked by using a n analogy to a story about a king who gave riddle to a prospective son-in-laws. Come to think of it,….if you’re the best speaker that night during Toastmaster meeting, you have a good chance of becoming a prince then?

Then TM Johan led a session on Table Topic. He explained what was it and how to do it correctly. So actually the correct way of doing it is to have a speaker stand up and then throw the questions (or statement, or quotation). The speaker should know the topic only when s/he is on the spotlight.

Guest Ivan, TM Arland, TM Kardinal, and TM Matthew participated in that table topic session. TM Johan gave them each a nice quotation to reflect on. Based on the ballot vote, the best Table Topic speaker was TM Arland.

Just before ending the meeting, the fully-back-on- track TOM, TM Vanessa, organized the roster for the next meeting.

So hope you all are on track now. Let's show it on next Monday!

First meeting of 2010

Let’s open the new year 2010 with a big bang at out first meeting back in Toastmasters in the new year, Monday 4th January 2009.

JTC awards achieved last year (Jul - Dec 09)

Dear JTCs,

When a member is finished with 10 speeches, he/she will get an educational award from Toastmasters and achieve the next title (that's what those weird letters in front of our names mean). A club that hosts more of such individuals can aim for the Presidents Distinguished Club Award, the highest award that TM International can crown to a club. Can JTC get it? It all depends on us!

I would like to share the good news (there are plenty tonight apparently) of the achievements that these individuals made. Please help me to congratulate them (or treat them to dinner):

1. Ivan Nurhardijaya - from TM to CC
2. Ronny Budihartono - from TM to CC
3. Astuty - from CC to ACB

Proof yourself at the International speech and table topics contest

Dear All,

Hope everyone is doing well and ready for the Christmas holiday. I am feeling festive myself, although a bit flabbergasted by the fact that we only have less than a month left this year.

What can we do to set a mark for next year?

In addition to participate fully in the next meeting (TOM, anyone?), TM will have its annual INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTEST early next year. We are planning to have our Club contest in February, Area contest in March, and District contest in April. To participate as a speech contestant, you have to finish BM6 by the time of the Club contest. To participate as a table topic contestant, you just have to be a member of a club.

I will share more information once I get it, however I'd like to encourage you all to use this opportunity to participate: as a contestant, contest chair, judge, timer, counter, SAA, and many more. I joined 3 contest already and every time has been a rewarding experience. Believe me :)

Next Monday, 14 Dec, JTC will have its last meeting for the year, and also its last meeting at our usual beloved meeting place at PB&Co, before it undergoes renovation. Let's make it festive and let's participate!

Minutes of 07 December 2009 Meeting

Good morning, fellow Toastmasters! !

How’s your week so far?

Well, last Monday night we had a splendid meeting! For the first time since months, the number of members coming to the meeting is much more than the number of our guests; 17 members and 1 guest!

Well one of our regular visiting guest, Rini, has actually paid and will soon be
formally known as TM Rini J

At the beginning of the meeting, Club President ACB Matthew interviewed our long lost TM fellow, CC Alistair. Sadly that night was his last JTC meeting as he is going to go back to New Zealand for good on the coming Friday. CC Alistair was our former Club President and has been living in Indonesia for 10 years.

Performing charmingly like Jim Carey that night (as commented by our one and only guest, so this is not my opinion! And I’m not sure that Jim Carey is charming either), was none other than our TOM, ACB Johnson. Just like the theme that night, Spontaneous, he splendidly lighted up the ambience with his never ending energy. According to him, spontaneous is love. You do things spontaneously because you love it.

(sigh…ACB Johnson surely has never tried what we called retail therapy, where shopping could just lighten up girls’ mood. I’m not sure I do it out of love….it’s more out of necessity. Well, maybe he’s right… I do love myself, and I do need some retail therapy sometime…)

Moving on..

TM Fathia was the GE for that night, very much supported by her team who volunteered spontaneously. TM Olivia splendidly prepared herself as The Grammarian. TM Alistair happily took the role of Ah& WOD that night, TM Kardinal voluntarily became The Ballot Counter, and TM Robert spontaneously became The Timer 5 minutes before he explained his role. What a splendid team! (yes, I’m using SPLENDID many times because that was the word of the day).

Delivering Table Topic Session very chattily that night was TM Yuli. She handed us a paper that reminded us there’s a lot of public holidays in December. In this session,
• TM Tomas shared that he would love to have a private party with celebrities (surely you can’t have the details..cause it’s private party) if he had a private island.
• Guest Beauty told us that she loved cooking and enjoyed going to supermarket, for her year end sale.
• TM Hotma dreamt of going on traveling around the world if he had a 3 month holiday.
• TM Jackson shared about his year end vacation with his family in Hawaii.

Btw, what were the things that you did spontaneously and felt great about it?
• TM Robert glad that he spontaneously proposed to his wife.
• Soon-to-be-inducted TM Rini never regret her decision to change her job spontaneously.
• TM Fathia somehow loved the spontaneously- decided tight scheduled spa vacation.

What about you??

Our prepared speakers for that night were:
• TM Selvi, delivering her BM#2, titled The Success Formula.
• TM Ronny, delivering his BM#10 (YEY RONNY!!) talked about how Toastmaster had helped him a lot at work in his speech ‘STAND UP’.

VP Membership Dyah represented the executive Committee and opened the meeting. She gave information about the history and purpose of Toastmasters and JTC in a nutshell.
Then came the cheerful Toastmaster of the Meeting ACB /CL Astuty. She was very astute in sprinkling refreshing remarks, stories and quotations throughout the whole meeting. One story was about our JTC member CC Eva who was able to negotiate much better about money after she sharpened her communication skills at JTC. TABLE TOPICS SPEECH SESSION :

Table Topics Master ATM Robert was very creative to involve the audience with lottery and quotes :
- DTM Harlina picked out TM Fadli who mentioned about the life story of Steve Jobs (Apple).
- Guest Rini picked out TM Kardinal who said that one does not need to be rich to become happy or famous.
- CC Dyah picked out Guest Puruhito who talked about how more money means misery… in a different way.
- ACB Astuty picked out TM Hotma who talked about how money leads to power and power leads to…. women…
- TM Selvi picked out DTM Harlina who said that it is hard to prove how money can make you unhappy.
- TM Olivia picked out ACB Astuty who said that we cannot live without money.

PREPARED SPEECH SESSION

TM Hotma introduced himself in his first speech, the Icebreaker (4-6 min) entitled:” Big Step”, and described how he stepped from the medical into the pharmaceutical world.

TM Kardinal in his BM # 2 , Organize your speech (5-7 min) entitled “ The people change, so does climate “, reminded us of the devastating effects of climate change and who is doing something about it.

EVALUATION SESSION

Tandem General Evaluators (GEs) ATM Robert and DTM Harlina were able to guide the JTC audience through the evaluation process. DTM Harlina reminded the JTC-ers to bring their Competent Leader (CL) maunual every time they go to the meeting, even though they do not have a role to play, because once in a while there may be still a role open for them to fill in.

VP Membership Dyah, as acting JTC president opened the meeting and gave the floor to an inspiring Toastmaster of the Meeting ACS /CL Imung.
She showered us with thought provoking statements verbally and with powerpoint.. .
A sample: It is not easy to discover about yourself, therefore take a moment to stop…and think about yourself. … Enjoy discovering yourself though the channels. She asked everybody in the audience :" what did you discover about yourself today ?"

TABLE TOPICS SPEECH SESSION :

Table Topics master DTM Harlina took us on a road of (self) discovery :
- ATM Robert explained about the possible "lesson learned" after watching the "end of times"- movie 2012…: "Be prepared"
- TM Kardinal explained how “you can discover more about the true character of a person in an hour play than in a day/year of conversation.
- TM Hotma : said that music can change the mood of a person and vice versa
- Guest Irwan shared about the difference in culture when he was in the UK…
VP Membership CC Dyah inducted our newest member : TM Hotma ! Mentor is DTM Harlina.

PREPARED SPEECH SESSION

CC Astuty delivered the 5th Speech of the Advanced manual “ interpretive reading,” Oratorical Speech: “ (8-10 min), borrowing Oprah Winfrey's speech and acting as she was Ms Winfrey herself. Some phrases that I remembered from the speech was "We all want to be heard. By sharing your stories, you can make people feel themselves.”

TM Selvi broke the ice ... better borrow ATM Robert's phrase.. she crushed the ice with her first speech, the icebreaker (4-6 min) entitled “ To love me is to know me”. She gave us a lot of insight in her work, hobbies and her thoughts on friendship.

EVALUATION SESSION

General Evaluator (GE) CC Ivan was very attentive and confidently led his team : Individual evaluators ATM Robert and ACG/ALS Johan were very alert and encouraging.
Further teammembers paid a lot of attention : Grammarian AND timer CC Dyah, Ah and WOD counter TM Kardinal and ballot counter TM Hotma.

BUSINESS SESSION

Announcements:

Division I Governor ACG/ALS Johan motivated the Jakarta Toastmasters Club members to be the number ONE club again in Indonesia... to take friends, family, long lost members to the club meetings. To increase and retain our members... so that we can have an attendance of 20-30 people again.
VP PR DTM Harlina said that to read the Toastmaster magazine on-line, "Click on the member's part of www.toastmasters. org and if you don't know your password,click it and it will be sent to your email address.

Dear fellow Toastmasters,

For those of you who didn’t come to our last meeting, I must say that you missed a lot of new things that night.

That special night, we were provided with variety of fresh juices; guava, orange, sour sop, and maybe melon (there’s one greenish juice that I didn’t taste). TM Kardinal surely enjoys his role of being the new SAA! Great job, dude!

There were 18 people coming for the meeting, including 7 guests.

A not-so-new thing happened again that night was after the introduction of the guests; CC Matthew conducted the President’s Interview. He chose to interview our VP Public Relations, DTM Harlina Indra.

How much do you know DTM Harlina?

Amazingly, she’s been involved in JTC for 10 years!! Isn’t that amazing? She achieved her DTM after more than 5 years. More amazing was that she said she thought she would quit Toastmasters after finishing her Basic Manual. Not only she has been staying for 10 years, she also was an Area Governor where she had to mentor a new club. Again, isn’t that amazing?

Introducing the theme for that night, FIGHT FOR YOUR HONOR, TM Ronny as the TOM, reminded us about what happened on November 10, 45.

When was the last time you reminisce about our heroes, heroines, or our history?

In my case, maybe last August, where I bought some heroes and heroines posters to be hung on our cafeteria for decoration. But I didn’t go through all the hassle and bustle of the history sides. J

And to be honest, I thought we’re going to talk about Karate Kid, the 1990’s hit movie..but then again, TM Ronny is definitely not shallow like someone else…(READ: ME).

TM Ronny surely did some research on that incident in Yamato Hotel in 1945. Moreover, he shared the details in a power point. Isn’t he a good role model for the young generations? (Ronny, I do expect something in return for saying this).

Helping us to get better by evaluating the meeting was CC Dyah as the General Evaluator. She was assisted with TM Fathia as Grammarian, long time Guest Ray ad Timer, Newly inducted TM Jackson as Ballot Counter, and TM Selvi as Ah & WOD Counter.

The word of the day was TRIUMPH!

After visiting our club for several times, the triumphant TM Jackson finally decided to become a member and was inducted that night.

A new variation introduced that night was the Table Topic session conducted by CC Ivan. Rather than preparing and asking questions, he asked what characteristics heroes/heroines have in common from the audience. After 7 characteristics was mentioned, he then asked people to come up and share their opinions of heroes in their lives based on one or two of the characteristics mentioned.

7 speakers showed up for this session; CC Tomas, Guest HOtma, CC Matthew, Guest Ronny, Guest Nia, TM Jackson, and TM Fathia shared their views of the heroes and heroines in their lives.

For the prepared speeches, we have 3 speakers:
 CC Thomas talked about ‘The Art of Selling’. Evaluated by CC Matthew.
 TM Kardinal talked about the many meanings of his name; someone in catholic church hierarchy, name of a bird, and many others. He was evaluated by DTM Harlina.
 TM Olivia shared her tips on what to during earthquake (and definitely not updating your status in your facebook!). She was evaluated by CC Dyah.

HALL OF FAME:

 Best prepared speaker : the one and only TM Kardinal
 Best evaluator : CC Dyah.

A new sight before I went home that night was that one of the guests registered herself to Dyah!
(Dyah, please correct me if I’m wrong).

After opening the meeting, Club president CC Matthew informed us about history and purpose of Toastmasters . Then he shared about what happened when he trained people for phone skills, about being aware ( or not) of one’s need to improve one’s skills.

Next he interviewed TM Olivia.and asked her how she felt before and after she delivered her Icebreaker (BM #1) recently.

VP Membership CC Dyah inducted our new member : TM Selvi !

An enthused Toastmaster of the meeting (TOM), TM Lola (British Toastmasters Club) warmed up the meeting with her smile and enthusiastic voice. She said : “ if you cannot be true to yourself, you cannot be true to others”.

TABLE TOPICS SPEECH SESSION :
Table Topics master CC Indri (British Toastmaters Club) challenged us to answer her questions with honesty.. Here are the honest answers !
- CC Thomas shared about a an incident in which he had to consult his conscience.
- Guest Lulu would try to challenge the fire of passion with an unavailable person.
- TM Lulu (Bank of America Toastmasters Club) shared about her eagerness to pursue success.
- CC Matthew talked about better thinking twice before you do something or otherwise get in trouble like Matthew did when he was a kid.
- Guest Henry: told about an encouraging birthday gift from his girlfriend : 5 sweet messages in a bottle.

PREPARED SPEECH SESSION
TM Gusni (British Toastmasters Club) delivered her first speech, the icebreaker entitled “ Outing 2009” . She shared about her experience as a member of the Outing Committee of her company at Anyer.

TM Ronny (JTC) delivered his BM # 9 : Persuade with Power : entitled “Sparkling Jakarta”. He talked about the “drainage wars” and “Borobudur-style garbage heap”

CC Matthew (JTC) delivered the 4th Speech of the Advanced manual “ Special Occasion Speeches,” Presenting an award: “ It was about giving an award to one of the “ little people” from cleaning service who did a very good job and showed leadership qualities.

EVALUATION SESSION
General Evaluator (GE) ACS/ALB Harry gave thorough constructive feedback and led his team well : Individual evaluators CC Dyah, CC Ivan and DTM Harlina had well observant eyes and ears and were very motivating.

Birds of feather flock together. That’s what DTM Harlina wrote in her sms to me.

That night, TM Taufan didn’t come to the meeting. Yet, although he has resigned as our SAA, he managed to prepare dinner for us. There were 2 choices of menu for dinner.

There was the usual nasi rames, since a lot of us Indonesian needed to eat rice in our daily meal. But there’s also other choice, gado-gado. I find it very thoughtful of him to prepare another option of menu since some of us felt that we needed to have more vegetables and of course there’s someone among us who was a vegetarian.

It was very thoughtful of TM Taufan to provide dinner for us. He is truly a sparkling star!!

Yes, the theme that night was THE STARS. The word of the day was SPARKLING.

I believe the theme affect our meeting in some ways. First, it was a full house meeting. We had 24 people coming last meeting (Yes, CC Vanessa counted correctly—continuing her email on this matter). We had 11 guests, including our beloved long time guest ACS/ALB Wivina. The guests came from various back ground. There were people from Price Water House Coopers, US Embassy, Engineering consultant, UNDP, a long lost member of one Toastmasters club in Banda Aceh, and others. Oww, including CC Matthew’s parents, whom he’d been sounding for the past one month.

Second, the room was very warm that night. We had been enjoying a cool room for weeks, and somehow that night was sooo warrrm…… I bet the sun was present in the room with us that night!

Since there were a lot of guests, in the opening remarks CC Matthew introduced a little bit about Toastmasters and how many club there are worldwide and in Indonesia.

As TOM that night, CC Dyah enthusiastically explained to us the various meanings of the stars, ranging from those sparkling thing in the sky at night, zodiacs, from boy bands, Brad Pitt, star fruits, and others. I have to say that I was impressed with her effort to search and put them nicely in the slides. I was also impressed by TM Ivan and our new sparkling member TM Kardinal who rushed to help CC Dyah when there seemed to be a problem with the slide. I was sooo gladdd to have an IT person as our member. Goodbye slide and laptop problem!!

Special that night, we had an induction session of TM Kardinal. I found the induction was sooo entertaining. CC Dyah was playing her role as ‘Headmistress’ , saying ‘you must…’, ‘you must…’, and ‘you must…’ to the obedient TM Kardinal who replied with ‘I will…’, ‘I will…’, and ‘I will…’.

Another thing that CC Dyah impressed me that night was she managed to link the previous session / speaker with the next one with a matching theme. She introduced me as a Pisces when she called me up as General Evaluator (by the way, this is the thorough report of me being General Evaluator). To play my role, I was very much assisted by my sparking stars; TM Yuli as Grammarian and Ballot Counter, TM Olivia as The Timer, and TM Kardinal as Ah& WOD counter.

Having been influenced by the famous American Idol, ACB/CLB Imung hosted the Table Topic Sessions cheerfully. Instead of having people to come and answer questions, she added some touch to the session. Guest Ping and TM Ivan stood up while Guest Jackson, Guest Dilla, and Guest Randy played the role of Simon, Paula, and Randy, had to give comments to them. It was funny to see some guests were hesitant at the beginning to either be too nice (in the case of Guest Dilla playing Paula Abdul), or being harsh (as in the case of Guest Jackson as Simon Cowell). After one round, they enjoyed and imitated the Idol judges very convincingly.

We have 3 prepared speakers that night:
§ TM Ronny talked about his favorite subject, health. He shared which sweeteners were safe and which were not. He was evaluated by CC Ivan.
§ CC Matthew gave a roast to ACS/ALS Wivina. As the star that night, she really couldn’t help to stop laughing. (there were actually some people walking out of the PB&Co office peered inside to see what’s happening in the room!!)
§ CC Vaneessa confessed about her crazy conversation with the master, Vincent Van Gogh.

At the end of the meeting, Guest Jackson said that compare to the other 2 clubs that he visited previously, our JTC was the funnest! YEY US!

And for the last week of October, we will have a combined meeting with British Toastmasters. So we will not have the meeting on Monday, but onThursday, on October 29 in WTC.

Which song are you?

Have you ever really thought about which song really represent your self? I know what songs I like, what songs I listen to frequently, but to think about what song that represent me…to be honest, I’ve never thought about it.

So, I guess it’s a really thought provoking theme that DTM Harlina chose that night for our TM meeting, on Monday, October 5, 09. Which song are you?

TM Taufan has confirmed to resign from his role as SAA. Somehow that night, we didn’t prepare the food, so (I guess) DTM Harlina and CC Dyah quickly decided to do something about it early that night.

There were 15 people attending the meeting. The number of guests outnumbered the members that night. Ladies, we had 8 guys coming as guest that night. (please wait a moment, I’ll come to this point later on).

All the guests introduced themselves. If you came two Mondays ago, we had Jackson and Andi coming again to our meeting. And there’s one guest, Yayat, who happened to work in Menara Emporium, and promised to come again next Monday. Plus, we were also very surprised to know that we have a new member, TM Kardinal, who came for the first time to TM meeting, yet already joined.

As TOM that night, DTM Harlina introduced the theme by playing ‘Starlight’ by Muse. I do agree that we have to set music before the meeting starts to set the mood. (by this, I’m hoping TM Etta and her lovely PB&Co would provide sound system in the room…hihihi).

Playing the role as General Evaluator was none other that CC Matthew. She was assisted by CC Dyah as the Grammarian, TM Fathia and Guest Joshua as the Timers, TM Sellya as the Ballot Counter and Ah & WOD Counter. TM Sellya has never delivered her first speech, yet she’s playing double role that night. Go TM Sellya.

Since dinner was delivered during the meeting, and since we were all hungry, we stopped the meeting 10 minutes to enjoy Bakmi GM. As punctual as she was, DTM Harlina reminded us to continue the meeting after 10 minutes.

Trying to match with the theme that night, as Table Topic Master, ACS/ALB Wivina, threw questions regarding music. TM Sellya shared that R Kelly’s song, I believe I can fly, best represent her. She believes that nothing is impossible if we keep trying.

Answering the second question, Guest Joshua said that a song that reminds him of beloved one is Doa Ibuku. This song is dedicated to her mother which he admires so much

CC Dyah, surprisingly, said that Arashi, a Japanese boy band, is her favorite singer. Another interesting information that we learnt that night was that actually in Japan, there’s an organization that grooms young age kids to become boy band. Not only they will become famous as singers or boybands (whatever you want to consider them..hihi), but they will get enormous opportunities to become actors as well. Not only the information is interesting, knowing that CC Dyah is a fan of boy band is far more interesting…to my opinion. (GO CC DYAH!).

As the last speaker. Guest Yayat shared that there’s one song regarding cancer that made him sad. He lost his best friend due to cancer.

There were only two prepared speakers that night. TM Olivia delivered her first project, confessing all the puzzles in her life. Hm…little do we know about a person when we see the appearance. So, what can you guess about her when you see her?

To save your time and energy, we give you the answer. TM Olivia studied Architect, but then she had a job as HR in a plantation far away in remote area in Riau, decided to resign and came back to Jakarta. She is now pursing her master degree in Accounting, and working in chemical company.

Lesson learnt from her speech is that it’s always good to know what career we would like to pursue in life. That way, we could save time, energy, and money to focus on specific direction. Two guests had the same insight from her speech that night.

TM Fathia delivered her BM#4, stating her humanistic view of a sensual star. When she said sensual stars, she meant porn stars. (Don’t you agree that it’s such a coincidence that night, that when we have a speech on porn, we have all the guys as our guests?). Although women might become a porn star by accident (when they pursue a career in entertainment industry), for economic reasons, or for revenge of an ex boyfriend, what they do is actually escaping from a reality of life that they don’t want to face (don't want to face that her career is so unsteady, don't want to face her economic situation, and don't want to face that brokenhearted is painful, dude!)

At some stage in our life, we might become an escapist ourselves. Let’s be brave in facing our realities, or else you might end up somewhere you don’t predict. She also stressed one important point in her last sentence, please don’t be a porn star.

The next session was a Song session led by DTM Harlina. Although Michael Jackson had his memorial service months ago, yet his songs remain in our hearts. That night, she chose the song ‘Heal the World’.

CC Ivan evaluated TM Olivia’s speech and TM Ronny evaluated TM Fathia’s speech. As General Evaluator, CC Matthew gave a thorough evaluation.

HALL OF FAME!
CC Dyah was the best Table Topic Speaker.
TM Fathia was the Prepared Speaker for that night. TM Olivia was qualified since she spent less than 4 minutes. So…the audience had no choice. Hihihi.
CC Ronny was the best Evaluator.

Although there weren’t as many people as we expected to come, yet it was a fruitful meeting as always. As one guest put it, it was an educational session for him to ever consider a human side of porn star.

Theme : Let’s get back on track
Word of the day: fascinate

After opening the meeting, Club president CC Matthew gave general background information and talked about the benefits of Toastmasters. He shared about his holiday and invited some members to briefly talk about their holiday.

The Toastmaster of the meeting (TOM), ACS/ALB Wivina emerged as a lively storyteller…to borrow the words of "acting treasurer for the night" TM Fathia, it was like a movie called “ Vina’s diary “.

DEBATE SESSION :

Debate master CC Matthew opened the session with a interesting anecdote and gave this statement to the debaters : “People should get a license before becoming a parent”
The twist was : Negative side (Jackson, TM Taufan, CC Vanessa) spoke first…
Jackson (guest) : Every kid is different, you have to be able to manage children in your own way
TM Fathia: Obtaining a license can prepare you and give you the knowledge how to handle children
TM Taufan : Who will give the license ? Every culture , every family is different.
Andy Nyompa (guest): Lembaga Perlindungan Anak would be responsible to issue the license
CC Vanessa : How to evaluate parenting skills, difference in culture, license for life ?
TM Olivia : Parents should be helped by Badan Perlindungan anak to become good role models for their children…

PREPARED SPEECH SESSION

TM Elbert : “I love me just way the way I am” , BM # 3 (get to the point), 5-7 min , showed in an entertaining way the benefits of having extra….weight.
TM Ronny : “ Deadly sugar” , BM # 7 ( research your topic) : 5-7 min, wondered whether his speech about the dangers of sugar will fascinate of devastate you.
CC Vanessa: Coaching progress ( speeches by management , the status report ) 10 – 12 min : gave results and recommendations regarding coaching in the company.

EVALUATION SESSION

General Evaluator (GE) DTM Harlina came up together with her team:

After opening the meeting, Club president CC Matthew gave general background information about Toastmasters . Then he shared how he acted as sample speaker for the evaluation contest at the Lippo Karawaci Toastmasters Club.

An inspiring Toastmaster of the meeting (TOM), ACB/CL Imung gave us some food for thought : “we usually live in the past or the future… it is not easy to be in the moment, to enjoy the moment. We have so much (electronic) distraction that can decrease our quality of life. Enjoy everything with all your senses … Use your beginner’s eyes to see everything, so that you feel with the ecstasy of being in the moment.

TABLE TOPICS SPEECH SESSION :

Table Topics master CC Matthew challenged us with emotion-laden questions :
- ACB/CLmung : shows how angily she would react after being put on hold on the phone for 15 minutes.
- ACS/ALB Johan mentioned what he would do if he was still single and was refused a visa to the country of his foreign lover ? He said he would ask the foreign lover to come and live in Indonesia instead.
- Guest Riin: pretended to give an acceptance speech as the best actress of the year
- CC Dyah gave her opinion about the issue of beggars and added that NGO’s can help and train beggars
- TM Taufan demonstrate how he would give an excuse if he came 2 hours late on CC Matthew’s dinner party

EDUCATIONAL SESSION

DTM Harlina lectured about “How to give effective feedback” from a leader’s point of view. She illustrated with her experience when she visited another Toastmasters Club. The presentation material is taken from “ the Leadership Excellence Series”,

PREPARED SPEECH SESSION

CC Matthew redid his speech of last week : “Quiet Mind” but as BM #2 (organize your speech). To paraphrase CC Matthew: “ if the mind is more aware, more relaxed, we can enjoy more the moment of e.g. eating a banana”

EVALUATION SESSION

General Evaluator (GE) CC Dyah gave sharp and motivating feedback.
Individual evaluator ACS/ALB Wivina gave lots of specific pointers to CC/CL Matthew. Further teammembers were also very helpful in their evaluation: Grammarian CC Astuty, Timer DTM Harlina, Ah and WOD counter and ballot counter TM Taufan.

- Area I-1 contest :
Club President CC Matthew asked us to support our club champions at the Speech Area I-1 and Area I-3 contest (the one with British Toastmasters Club) this upcoming Saturday 12 September 2009, 2.30 pm at Mercantile Athletic Club - World Trade Centre building level 18 - Jalan Sudirman kav 31. Club president CC Matthew opened the meeting at 6.30 pm followed by a recess of 15 minutes .
Special guests : Division I Governor ACS/ALB Johan Setiawan, Division G Governor DTM Arlan Setiawan , Past Div P Governor DTM Ganesh. Sangaran from Maxis Toastmasters Club, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A cheerful Toastmaster of the meeting (TOM), TM Khrisma invited us to celebrate the little things of TODAY… She really made good use of the visual aids….

DEBATE session was led by enthusiastic CC Dyah who gave the statement :
“We should allow the men to stay at home while the wife work at the office :”
Pro : TM Khrisma said that it is an equal world and guest Zulkarnaen reminded us that it is now the 21st century…
Contra : DTM Ganesh mentioned that behind the success of every man, there is a woman while guest Dewi stated that we should take into account the female maternal nature.

PREPARED SPEECH session: to deliver his AM # 5 speech “Quiet mind” from the advanced manual “Speaking to inform, our one and only speaker CC/CL Matthew researched and analyzed an abstract concept and …”make it more concrete”.
He informed us about how to avoid your system to crash : have an “aware” mind, “focused “ mind and… “nevermind”:

EVALUATION session led by General Evaluator (GE) : DTM Harlina who gave the floor to DTM Ganesh. What I remember most from his feedback is that in the beginning of the meeting, we should briefly mention about the history of Toastmasters.

Individual evaluator ATMB/CL Etta gave a motivating and specific feedback to CC/CL Matthew. Further teammembers were also attentive : Grammarian DTM Arlan, Timer ACS/ALB Wivina, Ah and WOD counter ATM Robert. The GE also acted as ballot counter.

The TOM ,TM Khrisma made us think for a moment in quietness and let us make our personal “ list of celebration”.. we wrote down the little things we can enjoy during ar regular day. guest Zulkarnaen , DTM Johan , ACS/ALB Wivina, ATM Robert shared items on their list to the JTC audience…

Contest time ... from a contestant's point of view....

Oh..it’s almost 6 pm. And I’m still on the way to Menara Imperium. I’m still quite far actually from Kuningan area. Called TM Vanessa already, to let her know that I’m going to be late….Oh…I’m hungry….almost breakfasting time. I’ve got some sweets and water with me already….

Finally I got there at 6.30ish…saw TM Matthew and visiting TM Nina and TM Cindy having their dinner. TM Matthew looks fresh after keeping his mouth shut for 10 straight days in a meditation course. I wonder should I go to one of those courses as well, maybe to get myself enlighten? Well, let’s think about that later…let’s think about dinner first, shall we?

Dinner looks good. They prepare three different main dishes tonight; chicken, egg, and fish. Right after I grabbed my dinner box, TM Alistair came and asked me to name one of ABBA’s songs. I’m guessing that he’s the cash machine that night…so the right answer should be “Money Money Money”. Unfortunately I don’t get any prizes for getting the answer right.

Hm….the room looks different tonight. The chairs are set up in theatre style, rather like a formal classroom back in the college years. And…there are some ‘senior’ toastmaster people..some of whom I’ve seen. some are totally new…I know TM Nono, I know TM Patar…he once was TOM in our meeting last month, and mentioned that I was ‘similar’ like him…

So I decided to have a proper dinner first, because I know I’ll be so nervous when the meeting starts and I won’t eat in the room. And apparently all of the contestants are being briefed while I have my dinner. After all the contestants’ walks out the PB&Co offices, the meeting starts.

We start at about 7 pm. TM Matthew as the president opens the meeting, then TM Vanessa opens the contest. She is the Contest Chair.

TM Ivan is the Chief Judge. Ooo…then there must be some other judges then? I’m really getting lots of big fat butterflies in my stomach…and who are those bules I’ve never seen? How come the air doesn’t feel ‘humorous’ in this humorous contest? It really does feel like ‘evaluation’ session only.

I always love seating at the back row. Now I have to sit at the front row. I’m glad I ate already. Me and TM Taufan looked at each other agreeing that it feel sooooo scarrrryyy……
TM Ivan reads us the rules of the contest. So after each contestant’s speech, we have one minute of silence for all the judges to mark ballots.

There are 4 contestants for the humorous speech. TM Robert was the first one to deliver his speech. He proudly admits that he is 60. He definitely doesn’t look 60 to me. And I do feel sympathy for him when he tells us that he really loves his wife, but his wife loves his children more. Even more ironic, the children love their facebook more. Wow…thank God I don’t check my facebook that often. At least my dad would feel I love him too?

The second participant was TM Taufan. I bet he is confessing his own thoughts when talks about “Single Male Skeptic View Over Marriage”. I really have to say I pity his girlfriend who sits behind him hearing all this. TM Taufan says in front of audience (and her!) that to buy a wedding ring, he needs to save 18 months, cause it worth’s of his 18 months salary. I hope his girlfriend is tactful enough to make TM Taufan digs his 18 month salary saving, rather than waiting for another 18 months?

Then it’s my turn. My hand is cold…and really I couldn’t remember my speech. Okay, I confess that I should’ve practiced more. I changed some of the content in the morning, then I didn’t look at it again before I went to the dentist. And again, I hate it when TM Alistair is right. Practice..practice. .practice. Since I didn’t do my practice, practice, and practice, there’s time when I totally forgot what I have to say. All I can do to get me move on is to look at those familiar faces, especially if they look enthusiast…and just talk. Phew, finally I finish with my speech. I thought it would be easy talking about something I’ve done for years, ballroom and latin dancing. Yeah, lesson learned. Practice, practice, practice.

TM Ronny is next. He is funny. He says that he has smile phobia. He smiled at a guy in an elevator long time ago, and then instead of smiling back, the guy seemed rushed to get out of the elevator. Surrounded by friendly people helps him to recover his friendly side. He finally thinks it’s okay to smile at strangers again, even in the locker room, when both he and the other male are wrapped in towels (only!). Maybe I should tip him off not to be friendly to guys in the locker room, especially when they’re not properly dressed? Or is it me starting to have this phobia now?

Then starts the evaluation contest. Again TM Ivan explains the rule. I thought the evaluation contestants are going to use our speeches to be evaluated. But it’s not how it works. We have visiting TM Steve Bowen from British Toastmaster Club, who gives a sample speech, titled ‘Achoo’.

As an expat, he has a weird new habit of going to the malls on weekend to find the most crowded spot there. Then he would sneeze very loud and voila…all those shopaholics would disappear in 5 seconds. Is sneezing some kind of magic?

I hope he’s lying when he tells that. But honestly, I could really imagine him doing it. His speech is very lively. His voice roars around the room, while he moves around the stage. A very very good speech nonetheless.

After his ‘achoo’, all of the contestants are escorted outside. They’re given 5 minutes to organize their speeches. TM Diah delivers hers first, then TM Robert and TM Henrietta.

Then while waiting for the ballot counter counts the judges’ votes, all of the contestants are invited to come up front and being interviewed by TM Vanessa.

And the winner is ...

Finally, the moments that we are all waiting for…TM Ivan announces the result. For humorous contest, the runner up was TM Robert, and the WINNER IS TM TAUFAN!!! ( I do pray hard that his girlfriend is kinda patient with him).
For evaluation contest, the runner up was TM Robert, and the WINNER IS TM HENRIETTA.

All of us receive a certificate. And this time, the winners keep the trophy!!

Finally we get to see who our judges are. TM Vanessa calls them up and all of them and the committee for that night were given a certificate too. They are Nono Sarwono, Harlina Indra, Michael Nicholson (British TC), Patar Simatupang (Jakarta Advance), Johan Setiawan, Samoati Siringoringo ( The Innovators TC) . The Tally Counters are Shabrina (Britsh TC), Cindy Resita (British TC). Acting as Timers are Roma Tampubolon (guest), Khrisma Fitriasari (Unilever TC) . Our SAA for tonight are Alistair New and Elbert Ludica.

TM Vanessa then closes the contest, and TM Matthew closes the meeting.

So guys…practice, practice, practice.
And look for a guy who has 18 months salary saving already!

Minutes of Meeting 10 August 2009

Brave and Pure. That was the theme of last Toastmasters’ meeting.

The meeting started at 7.20 pm. TM Taufan opened the meeting differently this time. As a businessman himself, he encouraged us to help other small catering company grows. So instead of having ‘branded’ food regularly, he encouraged us to have the food from local small catering company. If we know any catering company that would provide 20 boxes, each costs max of IDR 17,000,- , please give TM Taufan a call by Friday. He then will contact the catering company, and arrange the food for the next Monday’s meeting. A very brave act coming from a pure heart J

CC Matthew as our club’s president gave his opening remarks. He then introduced our guest, Ira, who is actually our long lost Toastmaster. She joined JTC years ago and decided to come back and join the club again. She represented JTC in the speech contest in Kota Kinabalu in 1994.

CC Matthew then introduced the TOM, TM Ronny. It was the first time for TM Ronny to be the TOM. Playing double role that night, CC Matthew was the General Evaluator. He was assisted by CC Dyah as the Grammarian, TM Taufan as the Timer, TM Fathia as Ballot Counter, and TM Khrisma as the ‘Ah & WOD’ Counter. The WOD was DIGNITY.

Having attended the meeting several times before, that night we also had the induction ceremony for TM Olivia. CC Dyah led the short and sweet induction.

Realizing that the energy around the room was a bit low, CC Vanessa, who stepped up being the Table Topic Master that night, woke up all of the audiences with her creative games. She wittily used playing cards and some of her belongings to make the sessions interesting. The volunteers had to pretend that we were doing a commercial show promoting a certain product.

TM Fathia enlightened the audience of the use of ‘disco’ sunglasses, TM Olivia promoted the benefits of an orange, TM Ira creatively explained the uses of toilet papers you never thought of before, and CC Alistair fluently talked about a nail polish.

There were 3 prepared speakers for that night. ACS/ALB Vina delivered her BM#10 titled ‘Preparation for writing my memoir’. She shared some of her own current activities in preparing her memoir. Some of them are reading a lot of books, join the writer’s community, get permission from people you will mention in the book, and write a blog to practice your writing skills. Her speech was evaluated by TM Ivan.

The second speaker was TM Collin, who talked about detoxification. In his speech titled ‘Cleaning out your insides’, he shared his distinguished skills in recognizing his own health through human “leftovers” (I’m trying to use euphemism here). ATM Robert evaluated his speech.

Finishing up her Basic Manual, visiting Toastmaster TM Steisi talked about ‘Living life to the fullest’. Having been inspired by the book written by Paulo Coelho, she decided to make some changes in her life in 2009. Fortunately she was able to achieve them, which was going traveling and pursuing a master degree. The speech was evaluated by CC Alistair.

In the Hall of Fame session, TM Fathia was selected as the best table topic speaker, TM Steisi was the best prepared speaker, and CC Alistair was the best evaluator. The president’s award went to CC Vanessa for stepping up to take the Table Topic Master’s role last minutely.

After hearing some comments from Guest Ira, CC Vanessa as the VPE reminded us again about the contest on August 24, 2009. We will have the regular meeting again on Monday, August 31, 2009. To improve our knowledge, we also watched a video of the winner of evaluation speech contest last year in Bali.

Before the meeting adjourned, former president, CC Alistair, gave our club president, CC Matthew, a black and white ribbon for our club. The black ribbon indicates our club’s recognition for achieving 9-10 points, and the white one indicates our accomplishment in sponsoring a new club.

How far are you in your public speaking journey?

When we climb a mountain, we normally aim for the peak. Why? Because we expect to be rewarded perhaps with a sunrise, a breathtaking view, or even just a sense of accomplishment. Where are you in climbing your public speaking mountain? What kind of rewards do you want to give to yourself?

It's that time again, to take a big leap, to reach for higher ground, and to soar and roar as a speaker. I am inviting all members to join the HUMOROUS SPEECH and EVALUATION Club Contest, which will be conducted:

When : Monday, 24 Aug 2009
Where : PB&Co, Menara Imperium, 29th floor (our usual weekly meeting place)
Time : 06:30 – 09:00PM

You can participate as the following:
1. Humorous Speech Contestant (minimum 3 people): speech is 5-7 minute and to
be original.
2. Evaluation Contestant (minimum 3 people)
3. Chief Judge (who will be in charge of getting 5-7 judges)
4. Tally counters (minimum 2 people)
5. Timer (minimum 1 person)
6. Sergeant of Arms (minimum 1 person)

Eligibility:

1. All members with good standings and have delivered their BM#1 are eligible to compete in both Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest (you can be a contestant in both), except those who are current and immediate past District and International officers. The winner for each contest will then represent JTC to compete in the Area Level.
2. To be a Chief Judge or Judges, it's preferable to that you have attended two or three area-level contests (or higher) to learn what to expect and to give yourself a basis for comparison.
3. Anyone is eligible to be a tally counter, timer, or Sergeant of Arms.

“I want to join, but I am unfamiliar with the contest and do not know how to prepare!”

Don't worry, I myself joined the international speech contest only a few months after I became a TM member and have found tremendous benefits in doing so. Most importantly, I have met great mentors in JTC along the way, whom have helped me a great deal. Start thinking about a topic and write your speech. There will be more information about the contest in the next meetings, so keep your eyes and ears open.

I will be the Contest Chair, so please let me know if any of you is interested in taking a role, especially if you want to be a contestant.

There will be more than one peak in your journey, but only if you decide to start climbing that you will find each peak gives you better and brighter view.

VP Education Vanessa challenged us to take up meeting roles for next week’s meeting. TM Ronny will be the TOM.

Toastmaster of the Meeting (TOM): ATMB Etta explained the meeting process well and made us consider “ to clean up your act and your lifestyle”.

General Evaluator (GE) CC Dyah introduced her team with grammarian Yours Truly, CC Ivan as timer, ACS/ALB Wivina as Ah and WOD counter and CC Matthew as Ballot counter.

Table Topics (TT) session was led by TT Master DTM Nono Sarwono , who did a creative scrabble game with the letters of the word” articulateness”. DTM Nono discovered the word “traceless”…Whoever found words longer than 6 letters were invited to take the stage and explain the word:
CC Vanessa (translate) … the more I learn, the less I translate in my head.
ATM Robert ( snails)… the race between the snail(s) and rabbit.
CC Matthew ( create) …used to play scrabble with people with acquired brain injury.
Guest Siska (article) … on her love for articles and the improving quality of news articles.
Guest Roma ( cuteness)… referred to a reality TV show where only cute and articulate men get chosen.
Guest Gwen (talents)… Express your individuality and speak up !

Prepared speech session was led by TOM ATB/CL Etta and featured two prepared speakers:

TM Ronny with his BM # 6 (Vocal variety), entitled “Flood in Jakarta “ reminded us : Let’s start with something small, throw the rubbish in the dustbin”.

CC Vanessa with her AM # 4 from Storytelling manual ( The touching story) , entitled “Look beyond the coincidence” told us about “How coincidence brought 2 people together through facebook and resulted in 10 libraries for children in East Java … and 28 libraries to go….”

Surprise Session was led by TOM ATMB/CL Etta. With just 3 little words , she was able to get almost the whole JTC audience on their feet and try out their vocal variety

Evaluation Session was led by a very articulate and attentive GE CC Dyah and the whole GE –team gave their report.

The best in you! That was the theme of our last Toastmaster meeting on Monday, July 27, 2009.

There were 19 people coming to the meeting, including 4 visiting Toastmasters and 2 guests. The meeting started 10 minutes late, and in the opening remarks, CC Matthew encouraged all of us to give positive comments to each other.

Being her first time as the Toastmaster Of the Meeting, TM Yuli shared some of her wisdom in life. Some of them was that sometimes we might feel overwhelmed in life, but actually if you take a look at what you have done daily, you realized that actually you’ve done a great deal. If you think you’re only doing tedious job, but if you look at the bigger picture, you’ve done something great. Don’t give up!

Our General Evaluator was Area Governor I-1 ACG/CL Patar Simatupang from Metropolitan and Jakarta Advance Toastmasters Club. This lively GE was supported by his team, consisting of TM Cindy from British Toastmasters Club as Grammarian, TM Taufan as Timer, ACB Irfan from Essential Toastmasters Club as Ballot Counter, and ACS/ALB Wivina from Kebayoran Toastmasters Club as Ah & WOD Counter. Although her family was waiting for her in Plaza Senayan, ACS/ALB Wivina diligently decided to stay and support the meeting. Go TM Vina!

Table Topic session was led by TM Fathia. Inspired by the theme of the meeting, she cited several inspiring quotes and invited audience to share their view and experiences on those quotes. ATMB/CL Etta, TM Taufan, ACG/CL Patar, ACB Irfan, and TM Cindy participated.

There were 4 speakers for the Prepared Speeches session. All evaluators introduced the speakers and then called and introduce them.

Introducing the first speaker, TM Steisi from Metropolitan Toastmasters Club, was CC Ivan. TM Steisi delivered her BM#8, titled “I love Indonesia”. Using pictures from her personal collections on the slides, it was easily understood why she was so in love with her motherland.

The second speaker was TM Elbert, who shared his own recipe on how to motivate our self. Having a clear goal, a mission, and then have the supporting environment were his simple recipes. He was evaluated by TM Cindy.

The third speaker was TM Collin. Delivering his BM#4, he talked about the importance of people skills. In his speech titled “Personality vs Ability”, he stressed that ability would only take us this far. A growing number of CEOs in his company were previously sales people, whereby their people skills were unquestionably super. CC Matthew evaluated his speech.

The last speaker was TM Ronny, who talked about ‘Smoking Kills’. He used his personal story in an entertaining way to remind us even passive smokers would still be at risk.

Special for that night, we had an education session. CC Matthew shared some of his tips on how to reduce the nervousness when we talk in public. The lecture was titled “Taking the terror out of a talk”.

In the evaluation session, ACB Irfan announced the winner for that night. TM Cindy was the best Table Topic Speaker, TM Steisi was the best Prepared Speaker, and ATMB/CL Etta was the best Evaluator.

In the closing remarks, our Area I-1 Governor ACG/CL Patar reminded us that there will be competition for all clubs in our Area in the first week of September. CC Matthew as club president also announced that there will be two kinds of competitions; humorous speeches and evaluations. No requirements are needed to be qualified for humorous speeches as long as you are a member. While to be able to join evaluation sessions, you must at least have delivered you BM#6.

Although the meeting adjourned a little bit late, but it was closed by a birthday celebration. Representing the members who had their birthday in July, TM Yuli blew the candles and all of us ate the cake.

REMEMBER, TRY TO COME MINIMUM ON THE LAST MONDAY OF THE MONTH. TM TAUFAN WILL SURELY BRING A BIRTHDAY CAKE!

Hi everyone!

I replaced the secretary in this week’s meeting. That’s why I made this minutes of meeting. Our last meeting was the first meeting after the induction of the first executive Committee. Hence the theme is “Achievement”. It’s an invitation to all members of Jakarta Toastmasters Club to help the club to become the President’s Distinguished Club in this term. The Toastmaster of the Meeting (TOM) was CC Matthew, who is also the president of our club.

The General Evaluator (GE) was ACS/ALB Wivina. She was helped by CC Dyah as Grammarian, TM Seisi as Timer, and TM Fadli as both the Ballot Counter and Ah & Word of the Day Counter.

Before the Table Topics Session, our TOM told a story of how he became a part of some wall-climbing contest, and announced that he’s going to be on TV several weeks from now. (It’s a self-advertisement. )

The Table Topics Master (TTM) was TM Taufan. He invited people to come forward, by first relating a short anecdote about a certain issue, and then throw a question to the audience. Five people came forth, including three guests. They were: Guest Irfan, Guest Daniel, Guest Ade, ACS/ALB Vina, and TM Fadli. At the end of the session, our TTM was also forced by popular demand to present a speech about his achievement.

Next came the presentation of Exco members. All Exco members that were present gave a speech about his/her role as a part of an Exco, with the exception of CC Vanessa. Her speech was a full 12-minute speech, as it was also part of her Advance Manual on Management Speech. Since it was a prepared speech, it was also evaluated. The evaluator was DTM Harlina.

The hall of fame noted Guest Daniel as the best Table Topics Speaker, DTM Harlina as the best evaluator, and CC Vanessa as the best prepared speaker and also won the President’s award.

This is my first email to you all as the new President of Jakarta Toastmasters Club, 2009-10.

Firstly, I want to thank the Exco from last year in leading the club - Alistair, Imung, Stephen, Jhonson, Ivan, Dyah and Etta. I know they have spent a lot of personal time leading the club, we achieved the Presidents Distinguished Club award last year, and I value their continued support and experience this year as well.

Now, allow me to introduce the new team for this year:

Toastmasters has been around for about 85 years, and our club is the oldest club in Indonesia with a distinguished history. We have already had our first meeting as the new Exco - we have some fresh ideas, and we will continue to move the club forward in a positive direction. This includes such things as more debate sessions, newsletters, and programs to help you achieve your speaking and leadership goals. Our aim is the same as the mission of the Toastmasters club that you'll find on the Toastmasters website: "to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth."

Finally and most importantly, we aim to have fun doing it - with the same creative energy that our members have always brought to our club - your club. We welcome your ideas and your involvement.

Minutes of Meeting : June 29, 2009

Are you happy?

Dude, it’s Thursday...one more day to go to the office…seriously… ARE YOU HAPPY?

Well, we were surely happy in our Toastmasters Meeting last Monday night, June 29, 2009.

The theme for that night was ‘Happiness’, and the Toastmaster of the Meeting was TM Steisi, a visiting Toast Master. It was such a treat for us to have a someone who isn’t a JTC member to do a big role. Thank you, TM Steisi. Her cheerful mood throughout the meeting was surely contagious to all of us there (Note: Word of the Day was ‘Contagious’) J

Our GE, ATMB Etta and her team evaluated the meeting. TM Yuli was the modest Grammarian, TM Fathia was in charged for her favorite role as the Timer, TM Diah was the fast-moving yet reliable Ballot Counter, and ACS/ALB Vina as usual performed her detailed observation as the Ah/WOD Counter.

We also have another treat that night. This time is from TM Khrisma, a visiting Toast Master, who played the role as Table Topic Master. In this session, she divided us into two groups, who soon got too competitive with each other. Each group was given a chance to answer a question. The fun part is, those who answered the questions got to do the Table Topic Speech! TM Dyah, CC Vanessa, ATMB Etta, DTM Harlina, and Prospective TM Jason stood up and gave their speeches. TM Khrisma also equipped us with a ‘Happiness is all around you’ hand out, to ensure we all go home feeling happy.

That night, all of the speakers for Prepared Speeches session were delivering their advance manual. CC Matthew talked about “Fact Finding Report”. Having done his thorough research with cars, bicycles, ladies shoes – everything you name it, he tried to convince us the future colour is red. He was evaluated by DTM Harlina. The second speaker is ACB/CL Imung, who did a monodrama titled “It’s beginning to hurt”. It was a very interesting story about a man who cheated on his wife. Poor wife, but if you were there and listened to Imung’s vocalization on the wife, you would empathize how he felt. (Naaah..I’m just adding too much here J). CC/CL Alistair evaluated her speech. The last speaker was a visiting Toast Master, CC Indri, who were acting as a Public Relations for Garuda Indonesia, explaining the accident that happened a couple of years ago. TM Harry evaluated her speech.

After the evaluation session, TM Dyah announced ATMB Etta and CC Vanessa as the winners of Table Topic Speakers, CC Matthew as the winner of Prepared Speaker, and CC Alistair as the best evaluator. The President’s Award went to TM Steisi.

That night was also the last night we would see our former JTC President, CC Alistair, to open and close the meeting. We had the induction of the new Executive Committees, which was done by our District Governor I, ACS/ALB Johan Setiawan. All New Exco vowed to perform their roles their best.

The meeting finished later than usual, at about 9.15 pm.

With so many special sessions (all speakers doing their advance manual, last opening and closing from our President, and induction session), we also learn a very valuable lesson to keep ourselves and others happy. In her evaluation, ATMB Etta reminded us that we all come to Toast Masters meeting to build our confidence to speak in public. So it is important to observe the positive sides of each speakers and advice them on how to improve.

It was a long meeting, yet a happy one.

Hi everyone!

Toastmasters Club is a place to make mistakes. Really? Well, that’s what CC Alistair, our Toastmaster of the Meeting, thinks of. The theme of the meeting was “Make Mistakes”. It means that people should stand up, make mistakes, and learn from them. That includes coming to a Toastmasters meeting and take a role!

Our General Evaluator was TM Siska. She was helped by a team that consisted of: ACB Jhonson as Grammarian, TM Sunardi as Timer, TM Yuli as Ballot Counter, and CC Thomas as “Ah” & Word of the Day Counter. The word of the day was “positive”.

The Table Topics Session was led by CC Matthew, the Table Topics Master. He gave an example of an event or a situation, most of which involved an accusation, and asked the member to make a speech based on it. Five people came up: ACB Jhonson, guest Ivina, ATM/CL Robert, TM Yuli, and ATMB Etta.

We had four prepared speaker. TM Colin talked of the benefit of a good night’s sleep, drawing from his own experience. He was evaluated by ACS/ALB Vina. TM Steisi, from Mets Club, explained how words can hurt you just like a sword. She was evaluated by ATM/CL Robert. TM Ivan delivered his BM#10 and reminded us to live life to the fullest. He was evaluated by ATMB Etta. CC Dyah talked about three things that make a person successful. She was evaluated by DTM Harlina.

We had an award session, led by CTM/CL Imung. The session was basically about giving awards to the regulars who are believed to have a unique quality. The point is to tell everyone that anyone deserves to be appreciated. Well, we are all winner deep inside, right?

Now, for the hall of fame. The best Table Topics Speaker was ATMB Etta. The best Evaluator was ATM/CL Robert. The best prepared Speaker was TM Steisi. The President’s Award went to TM Siska.

So, that’s all for now. Next week there will be a ceremonial handover from the current presidency to the next one. If you are curious to meet the new lineup of the 2009-2010 Ex-Co, do come. See you next week!

Minutes of Meeting : 15 of June 2009

Hi everyone!

Last Monday we celebrated Father’s Day. There were 17 people, including 3 guests. The theme of the meeting was simply “Happy Father’s Day”, due to a fact that every third Sunday of June many countries in the world celebrate father’s day. The Toastmaster of the Meeting was ATM/CL Robert.

The General Evaluator was CC Alistair. He was helped by CC Astuty as Grammarian, CC Matthew as Timer, TM Taufan as Ah and WOD Counter, and TM Ivan as Ballot Counter. The word of the day was “flout”.

The table topics session was led by TM Siska. She put questions on screen and invited people to make a speech based on them. The questions related to fatherhood and parenthood. Six people came up: DTM Harlina, ACB Jhonson, TM Taufan, TM Khrisma, Guest Olivia, and CC Alistair.

We only had one prepared speaker. TM Wim delivered his BM#2 titled “The hidden danger of Transfat”. He was evaluated by CC Vanessa.

After the prepared speech, we had an impromptu debate session, led by ATMB Etta. She divided us into two groups and assigned us to be the “pro” and the “con” on the topic of Facebook. Six people came up and representing their group. We had CC Dyah, DTM Harlina, and CC Matthew on the pro side. And on the other side, we had ACB Jhonson, TM Khrisma, TM Taufan. It was fun!

The best speaker award went to TM Wim, and the best evaluator award went to CC Vanessa. The best table topics speaker was ACB Jhonson, and the president’s award went to ATMB Etta.

As you may know, few weeks earlier, we conducted an election to elect members of Executive Committee for the period of 2009-2010, replacing the existing Exco at the end of June this year.

The candidates of each position had to make a speech before the audience before the voting was held. The names of the candidates and the result of the election have been recorded.

On behalf of JTC 2008-9 Exco and the Election Committee for 2009-10 Exco , I would like to thank all of you who had participated in the success of the election.

Many of you happily volunteered to help, to vote, and to passionately shared your vision for JTC during the candidate speech session.

Hi everybody!

Last Monday, our meeting was led by one of our “long lost” member. TM Fadli was our Toastmaster of the Meeting, and the theme of the meeting was “Everything Begins with A Choice”. He believes that whatever happens in our life, it is a matter of choice that we take.

The General Evaluator was DTM Harlina. She was helped by her team which consisted of : CC Dyah as Grammarian, CC Alistair as Timer, TM Wahyu as Ah & Word of the Day Counter, and CTM/CL Imung as Ballot Counter. The Word of the Day was “aberration”.

The table topics session was led by Madam CC Astuty. She brought tarot cards and drew one for every single volunteering speaker. Based on the cards, she then gave questions that must be answered by the speakers. Six people showed up, and they were ACB Jhonson, ACS/ALB Stephen, Guest Irfan, TM Khrisma, TM Taufan, and Guest Elbert.

We had two prepared speakers. TM Fathia delivered her BM#2 titled “Free Foods, Beyond-Imagination Activities, and Feminine Boys”. She was evaluated by CC Matthew. TM Ronny presented his BM#3 titled “Opportunity within Crisis”. He was evaluated by ATM/CL Robert.

Now, for the hall of fame. The Best Table Topics Speaker was ACB Jhonson. The Best Prepared Speaker’s Award was shared between TM Ronny and TM Fathia. The Best Evaluator was CC Matthew. And, the President’s Award went to TM Fadli. As for the attendance, we had 26 people coming, including 6 guests.

We also conducted the Exco election session. Our immediate past president, CTM/CL Imung was the moderator of the session. The candidates of each position had to make a speech before the audience before the balloting was held. The names of the candidates and the result of the election will be announced by our President CC Alistair.

EXCO 2009-2010 Election Night

Dear JTCers

Next Monday night will be the election for the new EXCO for the
2009-2010 year.

A couple of members have already indicated interest in roles on the
EXCO, but there are 7 roles that need to be filled.

Please remember that JTC is your club and as such needs you as members
to be involved in the running of the club. Yes, being an EXCO member is
a commitment additional to the regular weekly meetings, but JTC needs a
good quality EXCO to ensure that the weekly meetings are interesting and
worthwhile coming to. It is only through having good quality meetings
that you will become a better communicator and leader. So, seriously
think about helping out JTC and at the same time developing and
improving your skills.

For those who wish to put themselves up for election, please prepare a
1-2 speech, setting out why the club should choose you for a particular
role. Anybody standing for President, will also need to prepare a short
acceptance speech.

Dear All,

It’s not only election of president Indonesia that we are waiting for, there would be another election. Yep, in the next Toastmaster meeting, there would another election for EXCO 2009/2010. Speaking of leader election, tough global economic would need leader who could bring people to another step forward, and toastmaster is one of club to learn and practice our leadership, one of our capabilities to make choice. Yes, choice to deliver effort is one of the requirements to have successful event.

The next toastmaster meeting would have a very close theme with the election process; it’s about a choice. Choice, for instance: we came in the meeting, it’s a choice; we come to work every morning, it’s a choice; I wrote this, is a choice. It seems incredibly impossible to calculate how much choice we made every day. Generally speaking, people would think about making choices are always about the question, what’s in it for me? Until yesterday, one speech reminded us that when we are giving, we also are receiving.

So, here I am now, take a shot to be next TOM, take a role providing YOU choices for next meeting role.

Hi, again everybody!

Is there anything that you want to happen in your life? Well, we all have a dream, but it won’t happen unless we put our passion in it. So, burn! That is the theme of our last meeting : “Burn”. It is also a title of a song by Tina Arena, an Australian singer that our Toastmaster of the Meeting (TOM) loves to listen. Our TOM was CC Alistair, and he played the song at the beginning of the meeting.

The General Evaluator was CC Matthew, and he was helped by TM Fadli as Grammarian, CC Dyah as Timer, Tm Sunardi as Ballot Counter, and TM Ronny as Ah & Word of the Day Counter. The word of the day was “fire”.

Our Table Topics Session was led by ACS/ALS Vina. She talked about reaching goals and she asked people to talked about dreams and things related to it. Five people showed up and delivered an impromptu speech. TM Fadli talked about how he loved his previous job. Guest Poppy talked about how she found Toastmasters when browsing Youtube. TM Sunardi talked about planning. Guest Olivia talked about her week-end in Bandung. And CC Matthew talked about a failure that led to success.

We only had one prepared speaker, and it was TM Ivan delivering his BM#9. He was evaluated by DTM Harlina.

After the prepared speeches session, we had an educational session by ACB/ALB Johan. He explained about roles of Exco, and invited members to take part in the next term’s Exco.

For the hall of fame, the best table topics speaker was CC Matthew, the best speaker was TM Ivan, and the president’s award went to ACS/ALS Vina.

Minutes of Meetings : 18 May 2009

Hi everyone!

“Hobbies, Addictions, and Things We Would Love To Do Over & Over Again” was the theme of our last meeting on 18th of May 2009.

Our Toastmaster of the Meeting: CC Dyah. She said that people are inclined to do the same things over and over again, even when we want to evade our routine activities. Therefore she picked the theme and talked about things that we do repeatedly.

The General Evaluator: ACB/ALB Imung. She was helped by several people, and they were : CC Dyah as Grammarian, TM Fadli as Timer, TM Fathia as Ballot Counter and also Ah & Word of the Day Counter. The word of the day was “wont”.

Our Table Topics Master: CC Alistair. He posed four questions regarding hobbies. Speakers who showed up were : CC Matthew, TM Colin, TM Fathia, and CC Dyah.

We had four prepared speakers in the meeting. CC Matthew was the first speaker and he explained about Facebook. He was evaluated by ACB/ALB Imung. Our second speaker was TM Colin. He talked about cities where he has lived in and compared them to Jakarta. He was evaluated by ACS/ALS Vina. The third speaker was CC Vanessa. She gave a tale of two frogs that fell into a hole in the ground. She was evaluated by CC Alistair. The last, but not the least, speaker was TM Men Jung. He talked about consumer trends. He was evaluated by CC Matthew.

Now, for the hall of fame. The best table topics speaker was CC Dyah. The best prepared speaker was TM Colin. The result for the vote for the best evaluator was a tie between CC Matthew and CC Alistair.

Well, that’s all about our last meeting. I hope to see you all next week!

Dear my beloved JTC-ers,

Like waves, our JTC meetings are up and down. We have experienced the highest number of attendance this past few weeks, and last week we have also experienced the lowest ever! There were only 6 people attended the session. Thanks to Johan, our Area Governor, Harlina our seasoned Toastmasters, the always active TM Matthew who was the TOM and the TTM for the day, TM Yuli, Khrisma visiting Toastmaster from Unilever, and guest Jeremy who were there to make it run smoothly.

I understand that this happened not necessarily caused by internal factor, such as not interesting meeting, or a lack of enthusiasm from the exco, but it could also come from external factors which is beyond our own control. However, on behalf of exco, I would like to ask your feedback and answer these questions, and kindly send back to me:

1. What is the biggest drive for you to come to JTC? (eg. Program, people, venue, time, personal, etc)
2. What would you like to see more of JTC meeting? (eg. Interesting program, active exco, timely info, good coordination, mentoring, etc). You can also be specific, for example, fun program, debate, educational session etc.
3. Room for improvement?

All,

I believe last night we may have set a new record in the Toastmasters meetings at JTC - we had 3 members attend, 2 guests, 1 area governor, and no exco. That's right - a grand total of 6 people.

I was flabbergasted (count 'one' for the word of the day for me). Nevertheless, we continued. The theme was travel, and we had a table topics session where we all participated (including the table topics master), and evaluated each other's speeches. We can certainly all learn from each other.

Khrisma (our long term guest and member of Unilever Toastmasters) delivered her speech on Prague - what a beautiful city! Thanks to Yuli who is always willing to take a role, Harlina who always provides positive helpful evaluations, Johan whose commitment I continue to admire, Jeremy who came as a returning guest, and Khrisma for her speech.

Hope to see you at the next meeting.

Hello again everyone!

So, how’s life? Well, whatever happens in your life, don’t worry. Just face it with positive attitude! Sing Like No One’s Listening, Dance Like No One’s Watching. That was the message that our Toastmaster of the Meeting (TOM) tried to convey during our last meeting, and that was also the theme of our meeting. Our TOM was none other than CC Vanessa, one of our best speakers!

She began the meeting with a little exercise. She asked us to say “I’m sad” while putting a smile on our face and to say “I’m happy” while putting a sullen look on our face. She then explained that simple gesture can help us to tune-in our emotion to be positive. After that, she explained a little about the theme, and called upon the General Evaluator (GE).

Our GE was TM Fathia, a new and very active member of our club. She was helped by DTM Harlina as Grammarian, TM Ivan as Timer, Guest Marshall as Ballot Counter, and CC Dyah as Ah and Word of the Day Counter. The word of the day was “performance”.

The Table Topics Session was led by TM Men Jung. He had prepared himself very well before the meeting, and his session was smooth and solid. He first gave a little narration that led to a question, and then he called a volunteer to answer that question. Five questions were asked, and five people came up to deliver a speech. They are : CTM/CL Imung, Guest Ilham, ACS/ALB Vina, Guest Jeremy, and Guest Marshall.

After that, we had a joke session, led by CC Matthew, a very keen supporter of joke sessions. His call for volunteers was responded by two ladies, CC/CL Astuty and CC Vanessa.

We had two prepared speeches, and all of them were icebreakers. TM Elbert talked about the difference between man and boy. He was evaluated by CC/CL Astuty. TM Colin explained the meaning of “MBA” (not that educational title) that related with his life. He was evaluated by ACB/ALB Johan.

We had a special session by ATMB/CL Etta. She is a very energetic person, and it shows in the way she leads her sessions, including this one. She divided us into groups of two to three. And then she asked us to sing! But the rule was: one group can only sing one line, and then that group should point to another group to continue. So, we sang one line in each turn, one group after another, to make a whole song. That was fun! The song was “Love” by Nat King Cole.

Now, for the hall of fame. The best Table Topics Speaker was CTM/CL Imung. The best Prepared Speaker was TM Colin. The best Evaluator was ACB/ALB Johan. Congratulation to all!

Monday Meeting - 4 May 2009 - PREPARE TO LET IT ALL OUT!

Another week, another Monday, another awesome JTC meeting awaits you. And of course, I will be the one chasing you this time, with the theme for our next meeting:

"SING LIKE THERE IS NO ONE'S LISTENING, DANCE LIKE THERE IS NO ONE'S WATCHING"

Yes, you've guessed it... We will be singing, dancing, and having lots of fun! Come prepare with a printout of a lyric of your favorite song, be it rock, jazz, pop, heavy metal, R&B, or keroncong. If you have an iPod with your favorite dance music (even gamelan), bring it along (I will bring my iPod speaker)! But, guys, let's get down to business first and fill up these roles to have a productive (yet fun) meeting.

Minutes of Meetings : 6 April 2009

Hi everyone!

Last Monday we had heavy rain and traffic jam all over Jakarta. But yet, 22 people including 7 guests managed to come to our meeting. Not only we had an excellent meeting, we also had an induction session. TM Fathia was inducted. And she also delivered her BM#1! But oops, that’s not to be told right now. I should first introduce our Toastmaster of the Meeting. TM Yeni led our meeting as the TOM, with a theme “A Book is a Gift You Can Open Again and Again”. She had us bring our favourite books, and she also invited us to donate our old books!

The General Evaluator was ACS/ALB Vina. She was helped by ACB/ALB Johan as the Grammarian, TM Siska as Timer, TM Ivan as Ah and Word of the Day Counter, and CC Dyah as Ballot Counter. The word of the day was “present”.

The Table Topics Session was lead by CTM/CL Imung. First, she announced the titles of books brought by members to the meeting. After that, she used some of the titles as a main theme for the speakers to make a speech. Three people came up: CC Dyah, CC Alistair, and Guest Collin.

We had a joke session, brought up by CC Alistair. From oxygen to women’s brains, he really made us laugh out loud.

After that, came the prepared speech session. Four speakers delivered their speech. TM Fathia delivered BM#1 titled “Confession of a Workaholic”. She was evaluated by ATMB/CL Etta. (Visiting) TM Gani delivered BM#5 titled “Prepared or You’ll Be Sorry”. He was evaluated by (visiting) DTM Maria Megawati. CC Astuty presented her AM#4 Interpretive Reading: The Play, titled “Mouse Deer, A Great Table Topics Speaker”. She was evaluated by CC Alistair. Last but not least, CC Vanessa practiced her speech for the District Competition which titled “Do Not Mind the Gap”. DTM Harlina led a small discussion/evaluation session for her.

And then we arrived at the General Evaluation Session. Our grammarian had a long session of language evaluation, where he mentioned many grammatical mistakes and explained them to the minutiae details. It suited him, since our Grammarian really loves to talk! But this kind of session is good to enhance our knowledge in correct English. We should have it some other time. Other members of the GE Team presented their part very well, too!

Finally we came to the Hall of Fame. The best Table Topics Speaker was Guest Collin. The best Prepared Speaker was CC Vanessa. The best Evaluator was ATMB/CL Etta. The President’s Award went to ACS/ALB Vina.

Minutes of Meeting 30 March 2009

In Dyah's absence, I will be the Minute Man for the Toastmasters meeting last night at Jakarta Toastmasters Club (JTC).

TM Ivan was the TOM, with the theme "love with pride". GE was ATM Robert. 18 people attended, including one guest. Word of the day was "passion".

Table Topics was presented by myself, where 6 guests had to be a character and say why they were looking for love and what they wanted in a partner. Guest speakers included Brad Pitt and Britney Spears (.. and I swear they looked like them too ! !)

Prepared speeches were held by TM Men Jung, TM Yeni, and CTM/CL Imung. Their speeches were about following a desire, dream and a vision; The Twilight phenomenon; and Ms Rosa Park. I learned the three things needed to achieve a goal; I learned how great Edward Cullen is; and I learned about the woman who helped spark the anti-discrimination movement in the US. Thanks to all the prepared speakers - lets try to have at least 3 every meeting, ya??

Finally, a love letter session was hosted by CC Astuty - and we all felt the love and smelled the roses. Bravo to the TOM for his creativity and well .. passion. It was all very affirming :-)

Hall of fame: Men Jung (prepared), Johan Setiawan (table topics), and Pak Nono (Evaluator). Presidents award went to Pak Nono.

The meeting was lively and interesting, the energy high, and we had some very funny and interesting moments. I especially liked Johan's "ah/WOD" report which surpassed even Wivina's report for being comprehensive (and funny). Looking forward, we have TM Yeni who will be next week's TOM. Have a passionate week everyone...

Hi again, everyone!

We had an exciting meeting last Monday, thanks to our Toastmaster of the Meeting, TM Siska! The theme was “Unwinding Life”. She further explained that life can have a “relaxing” quality, as found in chocolate. Between sessions, she elaborated lessons of life she learned from chocolate.

The General Evaluator was CC Alistair. He was helped by CC Dyah as Grammarian, TM Yeni as Timer, TM Ivan as Ballot Counter, and TM Men Jung as “Ah” and Word of the Day Counter. The word of the day was “revelation”.

The table topics session had a different format, because the speeches weren’t timed. The Table Topics Master was CTM/CL Imung. She invited four man and two women on stage. We had six people volunteering: TM Fathia, ACS/ALB Vina, TM Sunardi, CC Alistair, ACB Jhonson, and Guest Thomas. After the women were asked to leave the room, our TTM asked the men to played different roles. Afterwards the women were invited again and they were supposed to ask questions to the man, before guessing the characteristics assigned to each man. You should be there to hear the questions & answers session. It was funny! In this session, audience voted only the male speakers.

We had three prepared speakers. TM Ronny delivered his BM#1 titled “Why I Joined Toastmasters”. He was evaluated by ACB Jhonson. TM Steisi delivered BM#3 titled “Dreams Do Come True”. She was evaluated by DTM Harlina. CC Matthew delivered AM#2 Special Occasion, titled “Looking after Yourself”. He was evaluated by DTM Nono. We also had a special guest delivering a speech : Toastmaster Anne talked about her father who was a very dedicated member of Toastmasters.

For the hall of fame : the best table topics speaker was CC Alistair; the best prepared speaker was CC Matthew, and the best Evaluator was DTM Nono. The President’s award went to ATM Robert.
